I'm guessing that the high price for owning and running an island is because you're actually buying your own server and paying someone to keep it clean but will there ever be a time when people can host their sims on their own home servers? Of course there'd still be a fee for a space on the grid, but we ourselves would take responsability for the maintenance and upkeep of the areas that we control anyways.

*joke: What about mailing me my server so I don't have to pay a high monthly upkeep? (When I get one) ;)

Jolan... it is a fantabulous, visionary-type of question you ask. While this isn't the case at present, in the very long term, we Lindens recognize the benefits of doing such things as open sourcing Second Life, making what you describe more probable. It's an enduring road to doing so, but considering all the achievements that've been accomplished so far, we've got a good history. :)

I was trying to find some links of interest--unfortunately the forum searches for common words are borked, but lessee... look at this Town Hall transcript for example:
Keep looking at the horizon with us, and thanks for being here. Maybe oneday you will have your own "pet island". :D
