Resolution and size of snapshots?

Hi-

Can anyone tell me what governs the resolution and size of the snapshots I take in SL?

I sent a pic to a friend and the comment was "you must have a wide screen monitor". I was surprised, because I don't! (but I want one!!!!)

It seems really hard to get a good close-up picture, and I am wondering if that is because of my technique, some setting in SL I don't know about, the graphics setting on my computer or something else!

Thanks,

~Jenni~

Greetings Jenni! Most certainly.

This is dependent on the size of your SL window--either full screen, or if you've set it to be a resizeable window, whatever you stretch it to will be the resolution of the picture taken.

ALSO, it depends if you're saving to disk or uploading a freshly-taken piccie as a texture. If the latter, then whatever the actual resolution, the texture will be resized to a power of 2 (128, 256, 512, etc.), which will change the aspect ratio and can make it look stretched out wider than it actually is--hence why your friend may have thought it to be widescreen.

I think before, Save As Texture did up to 1024x1024 depending on the max height and width of the window, but typically, I see Residents using SL at 1024x768, resulting in what are 512x256 snapshots. The current maximum for a direct Save As Texture appears to be 512x512.

What I often do is simply SNAPSHOT button (Ctrl-Shift-S being the keyboard shortcut) ---> SNAPSHOT TO DISK to preserve the original resolution, which can be seen in any image editor and modified accordingly.

Also consider:
  1. VIEW menu ---> CAMERA CONTROLS so you can zoom in or
  2. Hold Alt key, click on your face and drag the mouse up
Best of hope with your photography. I've done lots of closeups like this so feel free to ask me should you want to see any examples or tips. :)
