Hi Kelly, I have been experiencing the problems that Jitar is describing. I know that all technical people laugh like drains when I say this, but I am so used to there being general weirdness on the main grid when there is a preview grid up, that I more or less take it for granted.
I had no idea that this sort of behaviour could be a bug, and like Jitar, assumed that it was the asset server playing up again.
The problems I am seeing are mostly new problems, appearing since last weekend. I am working in a closed sim with hardly anyone there - three avatars was the most in the sim yesterday.
With no packet loss: * I am seeing a delay in shift-copying, so that the copy moves and rezzes under the original *I am seeing things move around on their own, reverting to previous size, cut, position when changed, in a random fashion *I am seein a delay in rezzing things, from new and from inventory. *I am seeing the render bug again, with things randomly disappearing.
Anyone following the forums at all closely will be aware of the work which Jitar has put into tracking down the problems which have beset him in SL, and also his growing frustration with the set answers which LL gives to people who report problems. While I have no special technical knowledge, the signing off of all bugs on introducing 1.9, when nearly all of them reappeared in the new version, I thought was ill-judged if you wish people to be motivated to continue to report bugs to you.
I'd suggest that someone from the technical team reads Jitar's posting to the forums. This is a major area of disatisfaction for a lot of residents who never post to these forums, too. Cali

Second Life is a complicated system. I am one of the Software Engineer / Developers working on both the Second Life client and the Second Life servers. While I don't know everything about our code - this is a complicated system - and certainly there are other devs who know more about specific areas of our code, I am in general 'from the technical team'. I can also gaurantee that I don't even know any canned answers. My responses come from what I know about our code and are true to the best of my knowledge. They don't touch marketing or get filtered by any PR machine.
From: someone With no packet loss (numbering added): 1 I am seeing a delay in shift-copying, so that the copy moves and rezzes under the original 2 I am seeing things move around on their own, reverting to previous size, cut, position when changed, in a random fashion 3 I am seein a delay in rezzing things, from new and from inventory. 4 I am seeing the render bug again, with things randomly disappearing. 1. This is a known bug, and a seperate issue from what Jitar is describing. I do not know when it will be fixed.
2. This sounds possibly related to what Jitar was describing, but not exactly the same. Bugs where things happen in a 'random fashion' are the worst! Not because they don't exist, but because if we can't reproduce the bug then it is extremely hard to track down how to fix it. And even if we think we have fixed it, if we can't reproduce it we won't know until we release it and hope it stops. In the end we must prioritize our tasks, and the factors that decide what gets taken on is determined by the importance of the task and the work to fix it. An equally annoying bug that we can reproduce will get priority over one that we can't.
3. That is interesting. A heavily loaded sim might exhibit that behavior, and rezing objects from inventory might be different than creating new ones if there is heavy asset server load. A universally slow rezing time is interesting though. What is your latency / ping time to the sim?
4. I am sorry, but I don't know what 'the render bug' is. I have seen many, many render bugs in the time I have worked for Linden Lab, and when I was a resident before. Is it where things far away from your camera disapear? Please submit a bug for it, and if you can include a reliable repro for causing it.
Just to reiterate, the bug Jitar described, as I interpreted it, was that he was really unable to edit an object at all because no matter what he did it would revert. He wasn't talking about randomly or sometimes reverting or snapping back, but constant, every change made, being snapped back.
Forums are a hard medium to conduct bug investigations; it is easy to misinterpret posts, and they are often lacking full information. It is quite possible that I have misinterpreted his post and that he actually has a different bug.
Bug threads can be the worst, because a less than complete description can lead a bunch of people with different issues to all claim 'hey! I have what he says!'. The worst part of this is when we fix the original poster's problem, everyone else in the thread jumps on us for not fixing it, because we didn't fix their problem.
