I would like to know how to get started renting my land out. I see no 'listings' in SL on rental properties available.
Whats the best way to go about this?
What are some ranges in weekly rent?
thank you

I've rented out some land. First of all, it needs to be group owned. Inviting the renter to be a member (be very careful about who you make officers though) of the group allows them to set it as home, drop objects on the land etc. You can advertise in classifieds, there's categories for rentals there. You need some sort of scripted rent collecting device really, to make it easier for you and your renters plus to provide some record of agreement between parties. The Rent-O-Matic is pretty good, there's a 'free' version which pays 5% of rent to the creator, or a paid version, which doesn't take the commission. Prices vary, but it's very competive. Maybe look at some other classifieds, get a feel for what people are charging. If it's commercial, things like high traffic are desirable. If it's residential, how nice is the sim etc... I would start by looking at what the big landlords are charging, that's your competition. How much tier are you on? Renting is not very viable on a low tier, but at higher tier, and with the 10% extra land a group can hold, it becomes more viable. Hope that helps a bit, others would know a lot more.

Not much information to go on (parcel sizes, locations, types), but I'll try to assist. What a lot of people do is set the land to group ownership. You, as officer of the group, add members that are allowed to place objects on the land. To keep track of finances and days easily, people use a 'parcel renter' (you can find a script for one in the scripting section of the forums, for free). It's a one prim solution that works for most. People pay it; it keeps track, sends reminders and so forth. I personally use a "Rent-O-Matic" that was modified slightly by its creator (thanks Moonshine!) so it blends in better with the environment on my islands. They look like the numeric addresses for the plots, built into streetlamps. (I put the parcel number texture in myself, addresses can be whimsical like 221b Baker Street, and so forth). As for marketing - I'd say put a 'find' listing or a classified listing, and just include the keywords 'rent', 'rental' or that sort of thing. People will find you. Oh! And tenants like TV's and the ability to change music channels - there are free TV's on the market and free radios (Crystalshard's & Dianne Mechaniques respectively) - or worst comes to worst, just IM me and I'll give you a free full-mod parcel music changer script I wrote myself (effective but not as handy as Dianne's radio). Good luck!

Thanks for your help.... I guess my question is, why is SL land not set up easily to be rented. I feel it could be easily added: Is this land available for rent? At how much? And you'd add that to your land's menu options. I see now renting land in SL is much more manual

And you'd add that to your land's menu options. I see now renting land in SL is much more manual That's actually a neat little idea. One thing, renting in SL is very hands on. You will find your IMs inundated, and tenants will expect (and not neceassarily unreasonably) you to come and deal with their problem then and there. I would advise taking a moment to think about how much time you have, and if you want to be spending it that way. The other thing, I think renting works best if you add value to the property somehow. It's incredibly competitive, and unless you create a reason for people to choose to stay, outside of price, you'll find you have a constant stream of tenants in and out, it's always possible to find a better deal. I think you'll find this is why people like Desmond do well, from what he's described in the forums, he worked pretty hard to make something special. Edit/afterthought: The classifieds work very very well. Every time I've used them, I've had a result within the day. It's a good idea to pay a little more to bump it up the list. You won't have to pay much more, just try and place it so they don't really have to scroll down much to find it.
