I would not pay any particular attention to the "US$ Spent Today" statistic.
If I give you L$30,000 and you give it back, just using the direct right-click pay avatar option, then that number will go up $200 USD ($100 when I gave it to you, and $100 when you gave it back.)
It is entirely possible, with a pair of scripted objects to push that number into the Billions, should someone actually desire to do so.
That particular jump could just have been a land barron shifting money around between a few alts, or between employees.

One could write a script that paid another script which in return paid the other script back and so on. I don't think one should but it would not be difficult. I expect you could make the daily "spent" volume look like just about anything you wanted this way.
I have no idea if this would be viewed as a Bad Thing, so kids, don't try this at home. It would not surprise me at all if someone did that at some point just to see if it worked.
