Avatars vs Land Size

Can anyone tell me how many avatars can occupy the same sim? Is the number dependant on the amount of land you own? Can an island hold more avatars than a plot owned on the main land?

40 per sim on the mainland

No.

Yes, user settable. I believe the maximum is 100; although I've seen Lindens set it higher on preview.

It is important to emphasize that these are total numbers. So, if someone else has 15 avs at their place within a mainland sim, that leaves a total available av allotment for that sim of 25. In essence, the success of your neighbors limits the amount of traffic you can host on your parcel.

Actually, if you buy a private sim, you can control the maximum people allowed there, even increasing it past 40. Though its not suggested, as 40 people are pretty taxing on a sim. Going over 40 makes chances of your sim crashing and go up.
