Negative effect of stipend cut
01-19-2005 03:16
Hi Catherine...
It hasn't affected me in a negative way, but I took an SL basics class the other evening, and money and how to get it was at the forefront of the discussion for nearly the whole class.

I have read some of the discussion that went on before the changes, but I keep away from the forums most of the time because I don't like the high level of hostility that I find here. It is astonishing to me that people in SL seem to be so generous, kind and giving of time and their artefacts, when the impression given on the forums is that they are out to get you...me...anyone who sticks their head above the parapet.

I think it is easy for people who are established in SL to talk about the 'tiny' changes to the stipend. If you are a clothes maker who charges up to 2000 lindens for a single outfit, you can afford to laugh at all the drama and enjoy it.

I agree that it is not necessary to earn any money at all in order to enjoy SL...but hell, it is a whole lot more fun if you CAN afford the guns, vehicles, clothes, scripted shoes, etc. I remember coming into SL and mistakenly thinking that I needed to buy a vehicle (as I seem to recall instructions about making for Ben's car lot). I bought a motorbike then found that the next 15 people I met offered me free ones. I can remember seeing lots of things to buy and not being able to understand how anyone makes enough money to buy them.

The situation that has now been set up, allows people who have the advantage of having been in SL for a few months (and therefore have money) to be free to rate people positively or negatively as they wish, and people who have just spent all their start-up money in the casino and Ben's car lot, not to be in that position. It makes that side of SL far less egalitarian.

The effect of negative ratings on people's stipend is something that established players can dismiss as drama, but which can be very upsetting for someone who can't build and doesn't want to spend the whole of their SL as a dance whore. Not that I have anything against dances...or whores.

I have not panicked over the changes - but I don't feel indifferent either. As I have chosen to spend a lot of my time on building, and have rarely charged for it, I haven't made much money, and the stipend does mean the difference between buying those scripted boots...or not. And I've been here nearly a year.

Will prices go down? I wonder....

The onnly drawback of getting less money now is that I cannot help fund as many events.

You got it entirely wrong, it means: I have no use for my L$ except for financially supporting other people's events.

Then Charge for your event. Every L$ dollar you collect for admission, return it in the form of a random lottery or prize money. In effect, the participants are funding their own prizes/winnings/whatever...

I spend more time creating stuff and less time goofing off. I like goofing off, but there is also the fact I am actually learning and creating things so it's a toss up.

Doesn't seem to have affected the equilibrium exchange rate or volume at GOM much. If people were finding themselves short of L$s that's where it would probably appear first. All the anecdotal reports here and the un-poll are way less informative than 4000+ accounts on GOM.

Then again, I never notice whether my bonus goes up or down anyway, but I've also played landed, landless, merchant, beggar, and thief and none of those state changes affected my game. Okay, not really beggar or thief but I did like the scansion.

I think there was a LOT of slack $L floating around, so it will take a while for significant changes on GOM to become visible, or prices to drop. But that in itself is a symptom of how inflated things already were.

I have given up spending anything in SL. Saving my L500 a week or whatever it is until I decided to buy something like a larger piece of land. If you see someone walking around in rags that will be me lol.
