Can anybody explain the strategy behind camping chairs?
They pay you to sit in it.
And they offer you a chance to earn more per hr if you play the slot.
How does the owner make money for paying people to sit in these chairs?

"Dwell"
12-15-2005 03:29
Linden Lab pays owners of properties for "dwell" ... its a subsidy intended to encourage owners to create content that will attract residents. Camping chairs are a "gaming" of the system, to profit-share the subsidy with folks who come and just be there, earning the owner some of that "dwell" subsidy.
Government subsidies routinely produce unintended consequences. This is one of them. _____________________

Basically, LL gives people real $$$ in direct proportion to how significantly they manage to turn SL into a boring, sleazy, worthless cesspool of greed and unoriginality.

Basically, LL gives people real $$$ in direct proportion to how significantly they manage to turn SL into a boring, sleazy, worthless cesspool of greed and unoriginality. L$5 per 10 minutes = L$30 an hour. L$30 x 5 accounts = L$150 an hour. L$150 x 24 hours = L$3600 a day. L$3600 = $13.10 USD (selling at current price of L$265/$1) $13.10 USD x 7 days = $91.70 USD a week. $91.70 x 4 weeks = $366.80 per month. I cashed the money out twice at somewhere around $350 USD (after fee's, server down time, crashes on my end) in the past two months. For a total of $696 so far. Helps me out for sure. Everyone else can draw their own opinions on the matter. ![]() Besides dwell there is also the traffic rating. Which turns the find button into a real search engine like google. Where people PAY to get listed for higher result. Oh if anyone has this idea that people are stupid enough to sit at their desk while camping. Well then 4 accounts camping and 1 account running around the world having all kinds of fun. And getting payed for it. Then there is the fact we sleep and make money. Hey if someone wants to pay me their own cash for traffic. So be it. Meanwhile I still sell things on the side. Not like I'm missing out. It's called capitalization. Welcome to SL. Thats what it's more or less about at it's core. Don't like it then go play Ultima Online or something where you actually have to pay to play. Rather than get paid. (Not that it's a bad game.) Sorry for the smugness. Been seeing so many people complain about it. ![]() _____________________

Mostly its to get at the top of the popularity list. It costs more Lindens than it earns in dwell, unless they wind up in the top 10% and get the cash incentive at the end of the month.
It is a silly strategy for anyone who is in SL for the money, as the sim fills up with campers and people can't get in to shop. _____________________

I think people will eventually find a way around that in time. The owners of land I mean. Like maybe having a small section of land for "rented avatars on money seats" ![]() That is just my guess of what might happen. But I'm sure people can find more interesting ways to work things out eventually. Thats what I would do if I had the money. ![]() _____________________

I tried the camping chairs on my sim for two or 3 days. And after sat down and did the math with a good friend of mine. Its really not worth it.

Maybe to you. ![]() Looks good in my pocket. Edit: Oh you mean being the land owner. Well yah. ![]() It is a loss of money on thier part. Dwell doesn't cover it in the least. But like Barbarra Blair said its popularity probably on top of it all. Oh well. gtg ![]() I'm starting to use these forums like a chat. ![]() _____________________

I think Sean didn't understand...you were speaking as a sim owner, he is speaking as a chair camper. To a chair camper, it's definitely worth it. To a sim owner, depends on your values and goals I guess.

If you and others are doing this with five accounts, it would not surprise me if at least one enterprising network manager out there was doing the same with fifty accounts and computers. _____________________

eh, Most of thetime youcna mke more money working then camping.
Plus FEW FEW people are goignto ahve more then 2 accoutns, honestly. Now if they were ALL free, that would be onething, but since its $10 a pop for additional accounts. camping is best done if yo can camp and play a free game at the same time.......which tends to lag you out. _____________________

That is true. It did cost to get $40 to get those 5 accounts. First being free. But I made that back in the first few days of letting them cook on my network. As far as playing I can use one account for that and have 4 others being "rented out" to someone who wants traffic. It does lag if its all on one computer though. But since its each on thier own system it's all good. But yeah that is a rare setup for most people I guess. I think I just think its easy to setup but thats just because I have to do it in real life all the time. ![]() Oh and the 50 accounts. Yeah that would cause mass chaos. LOL Linden Labs only allows 5 accouts per household. Or billing address. So unless someone is stealing cedit cards it wouldn't be possible to go over 10. At least I don't know of anyone with 3 (technical) households. If so I think they would be a bit to busy dealing with that, than messing with SL, if that were the case. Hehe ![]() I suppose some do cheat and get more than 5 in some other way though. Somehow. ![]() I never looked into it. (Other than the double billing address some have) Business credit card and personal. I guess that is cheating sort of. But I don't do that. ![]() _____________________
