The most efficient way is to get a job in RL, then use real $ to buy currency. That's the only way I've ever bothered to get L$, so I can't really speak for the other ways. I hear that being a part of the crowd at a club may be the easiest way to earn L$. That would be a good way to meet people in SL too.
You can try content creation and selling it in a store, but there is already a lot of competition, some of it pretty good.

if you are less than a month old you can money tree. Go to "Find", "Places", typein "Money Tree" and click "Search". this should pop up a long list of teleporter points. money trees are trees surrounded by 4 pillars so they are very distinctive, you'll be anle to spot them easily. you can take up to $25 per tree then you have to wait for your name to scroll off the list of recipients. Bills are L$1, bananas are L$5, Apples are L$10 and cherries are L$20.
Or if you don't want to go to all that trouble you can buy Lindens at the Gaming Open Market, GOM for short. L$1000 is about $4 US.
Of course there are other ways. A friend was approached by a "newbie" pan handler the other day.
