Hi,
I'm considering going for my "first land" but wondering how to check/ensure:
a) LAG - whether there are potential sims lag issues (i.e. busy land)? How would I tell?
b) Popularity of the location? - do you have to login periodically and check map for this?
c) Distance from transporter? - I guess you can check this yourself, but is it possible to put your own transporter in on your own plot? i.e. so people can go directly there?
d) Height - are there any height restrictions on what you can build? i.e. I see land advertised in 2D (m2) not in 3D?
tks

tks a) all sims can lag. Stay away from popular clubs and shops (anything with over 10k in dwell, generally). b) not sure what you mean by this. c) That'll be moot in a few weeks, as p2p teleporting will be here for all. Double click, et voila, you're home. d) The highest you can build is 768m, assuming you have the prims for it. To reach it, you'd need a minimum of 76 prims to go from sea level to that level. LF

Thanks Re a) - can I ask what you mean by dwell? 10k in dwell? Re b) - I was just referring to how to guage whether the land is a parcel that will have people passing through it generally - perhaps this is not wise anyway as if a nearby plot is popular there could be lag?

Dwell is how popular places are measured. Click the "popular places" tab in the find menu. The place name, and the numbers to the right of it, show how popular certain places are. Generally, if you want a lag-free sim, stay away from them when buying a home. There's always the possibility of lag. Find a quiet sim (usually on the edge of the world, for the moment), and you should be good to go.

Lordfly, when he says "dwell," means traffic. The geezers still call it dwell, because that is what they called it back in the day. To be fair, though, even midbies like me prefer the term dwell in conversation, from what I have noticed.

Why, back in my day, people didnt give out dwell points automatically after 5 minutes... they had to click on the voting stations! And we liked it!

Sim Stats HUD
12-06-2005 02:43
This may be viewed as a shameless plug by some, but this is exactly what I designed this HUD for in the first place. http://slexchange.com/modules.php?name=Marketplace&file=item&ItemID=34181 General Sim Stats with some added not readily available Sim Information: Displays the type of Server Class, Hostname, CPU Type & number of linked Sims for the Sim your in!!!

Wowza. There is no shame in plug, but how does it get that info? I didn't know it could be retrieved! I understand if it's top secret.

Glad to see an SL long timer see something new, makes me happy! Not a secret persay, just "Not readily available" Sim information. And your correct, there is no LSL opcode or event that can call this information. Which is what makes my product very unique in addition to normal Statistics. Well you do have to account for the time/space recursive loop from the: From: Torley Torgeson I'm currently doing something like Cory Doctorow's Eastern Standard Tribe. I've timeshifted myself, altering my circadian rhythms. Wowza is it ever trippy!

Yeah, I started staying up so I could talk to more European and Asian people on SL. Regarding this topic, I'd like to phrase that patience wins a LOT out. If you can, find a well-established community with neighbors that've been in the area awhile and aren't going to transient out on ya. Too often, I've heard of situations where someone moves in, but then the adjacent land gets sold and some really bad neighbors just happen to arrive. Awful all 'round. Let the contents of land settle like a box of cereal.

Stats Info...
12-06-2005 05:07
Yeah good advice. Also, some good stats to look at under the normal built in SL stats HUD. hehe Objects, Scripts, Script perfs, Total Frame Time. First 2 are pretty self explanatory. Script perfs however, refers to the number of Opcodes being done per second by the Sim. ie: ll anything is an opcode. Total Frame Time - This measures how much time it takes the simulator to run everything that the simulator is trying to do each frame. I even look at "Child Agents" as a big factor in Sim performance. Child Agents are people that are not in the sim but are still in "line of sight". Go to the below address for a more fully detailed explaination: http://secondlife.com/tiki/tiki-index.php?page=GuideDebugStats

I've been wondering about those voting machines for the longest time! LOL Now, I know. It was before dwell...er...I mean traffic.
