GDP is: consumption + investment + government spending + (exports − imports). But in Second Life there are no Investments, Import/Exports, or Government Spending. So we are pretty much left with Consumption. Consumption in SL can be tracked by adding up the L$ dollar amount of all transactions in a month.
Now the data below gives us the L$1 transactions which total to L$934,108 in June 2006. The rest of them are listed in dollar ranges, which makes it impossible to be sure of the exact L$ dollar amount involved in a transaction.
If LL could list just a total of all transactions in a month, we could determine the true GDP of Second Life. Just based on the L$1 transactions, it is already a US$3100/mo economy. What we really need is a better break down of every transaction.
Resident Transactions by Amount (2006 June) Transaction Size Volume 1L$ 934,108 2 - 19 L$ 1,771,293 20 - 49 L$ 629,819 50 - 199 L$ 743,103 200 - 499 L$ 488,058 500 - 999 L$ 202,912 1,000 - 4,999 L$ 191,749 5,000 - 19,999 L$ 54,410 20,000 - 99,999 L$ 11,559 100,000 - 499,999 L$ 956 >= 500,000 L$ 57 Total Transaction Count 5,282,409

TO get an accurate figure you'd have to remove all gifts of L's to someone else and all money only transfers and also remove all land transactions since those really are not created content. you might find as I have so often said that sales of goods in world are waaay down in the toilet. Just because you remove the income of ppl will not force them to purchase youre L's. Just means they will stop buying stuf which in turn hurts the overall economy far worse than stipends and paying jobs did. All of you who suggested removing income from ppl in world were sadly shortsighted. From: ReserveBank Division GDP is: consumption + investment + government spending + (exports − imports). All of you who suggested removing income from ppl in world were sadly shortsighted. Why remove land sales? I can understand about any of LL's auctions not counting, but why should an asset like land which is sold by one and bought by another be excluded? The transaction is part of the economy. Now yes, maybe the GDP numbers could be parsed in such a way to detail what segment is land, goods, gambling, etc...But all of that combined would equal SL's GDP. And actually, parsing the numbers could give savvy business minded folks hard numbers on what is the best sector of the economy to be doing business in. Although I'm sure, Land makes up the biggest chunk of the economy. Getting a real GDP number out of SL would also make marketing sense for LL. Because they could then promote the US Dollar figure of the SL economy/world. Of course, that type of marketing would draw in the people with dollar signs in their eyes instead of artists and such. But thats another debate for another time.

Second Life GDP

I have to agree with the idea behind this. I think it would be of great value to EVERYONE to have this information available.
Now, someone just needs to come up with the format that it should be in. The types of data collected...and all of the other details that make economics and accounting so fun.
Good Idea. Lets make it happen.

From: Dmitri Polonsky you might find as I have so often said that sales of goods in world are waaay down in the toilet. My own sales have risen notably since 6/6. Now, I wouldn't suggest for one moment that _my_ business interests are any more representative of the general trend in SL sales than yours may be - but none of us really have the big picture. Which I guess is the point of this thread....
