What's causing all the outliers on the currency graphs?

Very weird.

I was thinking people were going to muck with the market, but not this much.

Is it just people who are clueless or want to sell really really fast?

I believe it is because the system is not very intuitive and people are used to how GOM did it. This causes folks to put up their $L at non-standard prices. I don't think you can call the people who do this clueless, since the design encourages it.

I was wondering the same thing... but more from a math nerd perspective... blaze I'm sure you understand :P

Alan could be on to something... it could be user errors.

Maybe they need to add the instruction to the sell page, "If you want more money, enter a LOWER number."

Casual sellers say, "gee, current price is 265. I want more, so I'll put in 275."

(This is also why $4 per $L1000 is a better way to quote than $L250 per $1. It makes sense, not only to people who are used to GOM, but everyone.)

People like to screw with data. It happened on GOM all the time, someone would sell 1 block at a price that was way off of what the normal price was. I am not sure if people are doing this for that reason, or it could just be unknown error on the the listing side. People do strange things to get attention.

It could be the same thing that happens with land. Person learns for the first time that they can get US$ for their $L. They think surely people aren't going to pay that much for "game money". I'm going to sell it for what it is really worth and actually get some money.

They do the same thing with land. Look at how many people actually think land is worth L$1/meter2. There seems to be hundreds of people willing to buy for L$3-L$7/meter2 every day, yet you can't convince certain people even when showing them the prices in the Auctions and Land Sales. They either just don't understand or think that everyone else in Second Life is buying and selling at stupid prices.

I'm not sure how this could really be fixed. No matter where you put the education about how to find the actual value of things in Second Life, people will miss it or disagree. At least they suggest a value to people automatically when they sell $L. It is too bad some people will miss the fact of why that number is suggested.

It all depends on how patient you are. If L$ are selling for X/$1USD, then if you want to sell pretty much immediately, you list at X+1. If you're willing to wait a few hours for the sale, list at X. If you're not in a hurry, go ahead and list at X-n.

X+1 only really serves those who want to get their USD more or less immediately. On the other hand, X+n has either got to be a user error (misunderstanding) or an attempt to erode confidence in the rate of exchange. Well...maybe it could be something else, but why else would you try to sell at (say) X+20, when X+1 will sell just as fast, and earn you that little bit more?

I prefer the latter.

You would do a X+n in hopes that you sell yours before someone else would do an X+1 over you. By making the price even lower you hope that anyone else wanting to sell quick would do the same as you, or you hope more will buy because it is a great deal.

Ah, the notorious concision continues.

The outliers are your alts attempting to screw with the market, or they are LL playing market research, or they are bugs.

And of course no one is as clueful as you, champ; why does this still surprise you? Is it just that you are clueless or want to sell really really fast?

Very weird.
