I recently purchased some First Land all the way at the edge of the Grid. I have nice neighbors, for the most part, and a nice view of some trees (though how long that will last remains to be seen) and a fairly unobstructed sunrise every morning. I'm 800+ m. from the nearest telehub, so it takes me a while to fly home if I've been out. Sometimes I walk it, which takes even longer.
I'd like to keep it that way. My fear is that the Lindens will add a sim next door on the next grid expansion and slap a telehub down there which will immediately attract malls, casinos, clubs and *lag*, and all my peace and quiet will go out the window. Yes, it might make my (mature) plot even more valuable, but I'm not really in SL to pile up L$. We have the beginnings of a nice little community going where I am and picking up and moving halfway across the grid just doesn't appeal to me anyway.
So here's a plea for some sensitivity in the next grid expansion as far as telehubs are concerned. I haven't been around long enough to see how this has been done in the past so I'm not saying the system is broke and needs to be fixed, I'm just asking that new telehubs be placed to as to best preserve the character of existing sims. This is definitely do-able. For instance, perhaps instead of adding six or eight N-S sims next door to each other, one of them with a telehub, the grid architecture could be expanded by adding a 2 X 3 or 2 X 4 block of sims with its long axis extending E-W and the telehub at the furthest point from existing properties. The First Land on those sims would sell faster that way too, I imagine. Even if something like this were right next to my sim, I'd much prefer the flyover traffic to the hulking behemoth of a mall.
Just a thought. I'm interested to know what other people think. And if this is an issue already dealt with elsewhere/previously, please accept my newbie apologies.

One ques for you - are you aware that you can set your plot of land to be your home? You can then teleport directly there at any time, instead of having to fly. Stand on your land, and go to World-->Set Home Location to Here (or something similar, I forget the exact wording). You can then teleport home easily.

From: Cristiano Midnight you can set your plot of land to be your home? You can then teleport directly there at any time, instead of having to fly Thanks, Cristiano. It's funny, because I knew that, but I just haven't been doing it. However, I don't actually mind the trip between the telehub and my pad. I quite enjoy it, actually. What I'm worried about is the possibility of a *new* telehub getting plopped down next door when the grid next expands. Part of what attracted me to the plot I chose was its seclusion. I'd love it if that character could be maintained. If it has to change, I'd prefer the change come from user activities (a Tringo parlor going up nearby, for instance, which there is), rather than from deus ex machina events like a new sim. And again I'd like to stress that I have no insight into past grid expansions and am not complaining about how they've been handled in the past, I'm just putting my L$5 (about 2 cents) in as to possible future plans. I was originally going to post this thread in the Feature Suggestions forum for that reason, but didn't really think it belonged there in the end.

This exact thing happened to me in Isere. For two months, I lived on the edge of nothingness, 800m from a telehub. Then one day, I returned home to find Hanson next door. I was delighted - till they put a telehub right in the middle of Hanson! It totally changed the feel of the area. Neon lights with slot machines and garish skin, hair and clothing prims. Some of the people who moved in did take efforts to build their mall buildings in theme with the snowy area, but it was still a very different place. I stuck it out for a while, but am slowly moving to a quieter area. If you're on the edge of the world, the further you are from a current hub the more likely you are to be right next to one when the world expands.

Although it's nice to have voices like yours sounding in the wilderness, Lissie, and perhaps reaching the ear of a Linden or three. Curious to know what you did do after the telehub came in. Did you move?

From: Walker Spaight Curious to know what you did do after the telehub came in. Did you move? I'm still in the process of selling off my land there, and buying more land in a more distant Sim. It's a long process. Anyone want some prime, 200m to telehub PG snow land?
