I see a lot of people quietly selling off islands, or sometimes with more hubbub. I also see some folks looking to implement new business models. I am curious to know what percentage of people downsize their land holdings as a reaction to LL decisions.

Are all the current land speculators going to step up and absorb the oncoming land glut? Pity, I was hoping for a land slide (pun intended). |

I downgraded my tier a long time ago not due to LL policies (my land was used to house my store and a private space for friends), but rather the absolute hideousness of the maingrid and went rental.
I do plan to own more land in the future but for that I'll have to buy a sim. ![]() _____________________

I bought new land and upped my tier again as a response to recent events, before the last day or so even, but just the general increase in communication and response I percieve from LL lately, after spending some time previously considering what direction I would take.
Philip knowing to post in the land and economy forum personally, the recent decisions, even the introduction of things like flexi-prims all give me more faith that things are moving in a satisfactory direction. |

My experience thus far is that people don't want to pay even auction prices for mainland land, though. They expect to come in and buy it up for half the owner's original cost. This is not the same as saying land is rare. People seem to be in agreement that (islands aside) there is a land glut in sl (or so I read from everyone NOT wanting to buy land at half it's original cost).

I never went to the clubs on a regular due to the high lag. Me and my friends own some property in the new lands. These sport all new servers and run very well indeed. We had no interuption of service last Saturday.
If anything more of us will be on the grounds than before. I just wonder how long club owners will pay money to "entertain" others? The same goes with the sex clubs. How long will it be before there is a "cover" charge? As my Chinese cousins say "May you live in interesting times!" |

Recent policy decisions show a move away from a TSO-like economy toward something more sustainable. The long term projections are now looking better. This allows me to recommend SL to those who would like to get some first hand experience with an eye to serious future investment. At present the ROI on SL real estate cannot compete with RL returns, but the barriers to entry are very low. It's a great time to get some experience, and experiment with different business models.
Unfortunately the entertainment sector in SL suffers from a general expectation that all entertainment within our virtual world 'should' be offered for free. This weird expectation is TSO-like thinking; it certainly has no RL analog. In time the extinction of DI and dwell is likely to split the entertainment sector into profit (such as clubs with a first-rate live DJ and really good conversation or fights, not a crowd of people all in IMs) and non-profit (such as discussion groups). SL is undergoing rapid upgrades, so it's reasonable to consider this an extended beta. The platform is in beta, and our business models are in beta, so it would be helpful to develop a more easygoing culture that reinforces the process of entrepreneurial experimentation. |

I've never been a major landholder, but I have been involved in SL for nearly two years, with fluctuating landholdings, and I see more stability and, if anything, upward trends, than cause for alarm. Parcels with inherent interest factors will appreciate with age, particularly given the lack of attention to landscaping at LL of late. "Flat, green" parcels will hold relatively steady. Island estates, so far as they maintain an individual identity, will continue to draw crowds, and find new ways to profit from their fans, be it via sales, covers, or membership fees. Signing onto SL is an agreement to live in "interesting times;" whether we make a blessing or a curse of it is a matter of choice.

Why are you cursing us, Ranma? Not at all, you are getting what you want, right? Now you will want the stipends to be removed. This too will have no real effect on me. |

Yep, went from about a whole sim to free basic allotment shortly after v1.7, because of v1.7.

I'm not downsizing, but I've decided to cut the amount needed for my future plans in half. This means that I will not increase tier anytime soon.

I have not downsized, and in fact have increased my holdings to the tune of $40 a month. (Wish there wasn't such a jump between that and $75!)
Very few of the changes have affected me directly. Cutting the ratings bonuses didn't have much of an effect, because by the time I got here they were costing $25 each. Those who were here before got the biggest benefit of that plan. So even though I loved the little bit I got, I felt it wasn't fair that others were getting the same bonus per rating when those ratings had only cost them one Linden in the first place. In fact, those who were here early on are some of the most vocal in getting rid of all the programs that benefitted them and enabled them to have riches today. Preventing others from having any is a good way to get others to buy their Lindens from them at a nice, high, stable price. I mean, above all else, let's make sure those people don't have to sell their Lindens for less, no matter what. The ever-increasing requirements to play, move, or see anything haven't rendered me unable to play yet, and I imagine if they do I will think about getting a new computer anyway. Cutting the referral bonus for basic wasn't particularly good, because I had benefited from that a fair amount. $1500 is quite a bit of money to me, and was even more right after I joined, so I'm glad I didn't miss out on that. But the last half of that I did somewhat reluctantly anyway. Cutting the Developer's Incentive didn't affect me, of course, and never would. Cutting traffic - well, I did like my few bucks here and there, as I operate on a small scale that means a few bucks here or there actually count for me. I'm not among the SL wealthy. But - I dislike cutting traffic as it represents another hit on the entertainment sector, and I imagine that will ultimately affect my sales in a negative way, but it is sort of a wait and see thing for me. But if they cut my stipends, I will have to reconsider. After all, I can just rent land for my shop. Besides, if they do that, I will conclude that the Lindens prefer to have nothing but a few large landowners anyway, plus a bunch of basics, and really don't need the monthly income from people having premium accounts. On the other hand, I might get stubborn and refuse to be squeezed out in the rush toward an economy of those who have and those who don't. Those who have are really most vocal in getting it to be that way, and you know, that is just what human nature is where money is involved, I suppose. That some want us to not even be able to advertise a garage sale, though, I think is really carrying it way too far. I mean, people - leave us something. coco _____________________
