While devaluation of the L$ by 'printing' money for new users is a problem, I don't think it's the root of the currency slide.
TRADE
I suspect that what L$ really need is trade with the RL world. Currently people buy L$ in order to do things which are fun/useful/whatever _inside_ SL.
As people come up with things to do inside SL which are of use to the outside world then more RL people and organisations will have a reason to buy L$, to get things done, not just because they want to do stuff inside SL.
Currently the major players in SL currency trades are taking money out of SL, so of course the currency will devalue. SL needs people to think of ways to bring money in to SL to have services performed for the outside world.
I like to think of SL as a country which has some tourism but doesn't yet produce anything for export (correct me if I'm wrong). The exports will be services, but they needn't require the external party to the trade to visit SL at all.
Just my L$6 worth.

I agree completely, although I describe it a little differently: in the economic terms of "value." Many people work within SL to create value in SL (e.g. home builders). Some people work in RL to create SL value (e.g. fashion designers). But few people yet work in SL to create RL value. In my mind, when the "metaverse" provides the infrastructure needed to create RL value, that's when it will really take off.
I look forward to a time when SL (or some other expression of the metaverse) is truly a virtual environment for collaboration on RL work. One that lowers the barriers of geography and culture, providing a common ground for enterprise.
Right now, some important infrastructure is missing. We need more linkage between SL and RL. For example, let me access and update RL databases from within SL. Let me access SL data from RL. Let me develop SL collaboration tools that I can integrate with RL business systems. Let me access RL applications from within SL. I want to display PowerPoint presentations from within SL. I want to integrate with source code version control and my issue tracking system from within SL. I want to be able to send and receive SL PMs to/from email, IM systems and SMS cell phones. For goodness sake, I'd like to even view HTML web pages from within SL.
IMHO, the future is clear. These linkages between RL and the metaverse WILL come about. Granted, it may not be Linden Labs that makes it happen, but someone will.
