I've just joined SL, and I'm looking around for some land to claim (I get 512M or something like that). Thing is, I can't find any! Is there anywhere that it isn't all taken? (yeah, I looked on the map for available land. The only space seems to be for private sale or auction)
A couple of other newbie questions while I'm at it:
-I use Lightwave. Is it possible to import content rather than trying to create it with the build commands of my avatar?
-Is there a more detailed instruction manual than the one on the Help tab?

use the tabs at the bottom of your screen & go into find. choose land......use the drop down box to choose first land & then set area to 512. after your search is complete, you should have a list of all available first land that's for sale
good luck!!!!!

You'll need to make sure you use Edit--->Find on the toolbar (Ctrl-F), make sure you select the Land Sales tab, then in the dropdown on the upper-left (should default to 'all') select 'First Land' and click on a parcel listing. This should show some information on the right of the panel, most of the time there isn't a picture, but you can use the Teleport / Map / Landmark buttons to get there - teleport being most direct. Once you get to the parcel you want, (hit 'P' while not in chat mode to toggle property lines if needed), you can claim this and buy it for L$512, or L$1 per sq/m. After you've bought your parcel, a few words of caution - the median price for selling land right now is about L$4.88 per sq/m. The inherent value of a 512 plot then is L$2,457 maximum, typically you'll see land selling from 3.9 to 4.0, which is L$1996 and L$2,048 respectively. Beware anyone approaching you for your land who offers less than this, because they are trying to pull the wool over your eyes. Regrettably, some people here have built quite an empire based on the ethically bankrupt strategy of ripping off newbies, and I'd like you not to be another victim. Lightwave, while interesting and fully-featured as a 3D modeling program, isn't entirely possible to import models. There are some exceptions Pedro (his last name escapes me) has made an importer that will rezz actual triangles based on the contents of a mesh file, but that is less efficient than building, in the long run, though I'm sure he'll try to optimize it, possibly. You're better off trying to build first, then you can understand the mechanics and get used to how the build system operates. As far as detailed help, there are the forums here that you can search, or if you are inclined, hit EfNet and connect to the unofficial IRC channel #secondlife and ask your question - there is usually someone around who can point you in the right direction. Barring that, you can always try the in-game 'Live Help' option, but that depends on availabiliy of helpers at the time you ask your question. If all else fails, you can ask a Linden, however they're very busy and may not respond right away. Enjoy your land, and enjoy SL

Thanks for your help. I've been able to locate the new land.
However, it's all in uninteresting locations, invariably down in the bottom right hand corner, and I hadn't realised how small a 512m plot was.
Basically, I wanted to make a pachinko parlor, and it isn't going to fit on a tiny little bit of land like that. I'd also like for it to be noticed, which means stuffing it down in the bottom right corner won't do.
So I'm in a predicament. If I spend more RL money each month for a bigger plot, I'm still stuck with whatever is available for first land (not a lot, and nothing that is very good), and I don't have enough L$ to buy anything in a good location off anyone else (though I'm sure there is a US$ solution for that, I wasn't planning on investing much real money in this). I've also read that the hight of my plot is only the equivalent of a two story building, so do I have to pay to build up as well? It could get expensive really fast, and I wonder at all the people here who have built large structures. Is it just an expensive past-time, are they rich, or do they make real world money out of it?
Also, I'm not sure how much effort is required to build anything. I hope there is a way to get models into SL. Is there an advanced tutorial someone could point me to?
Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Johny, welcome to Second Life -- this is a FANTASTIC idea, and I hope to see this... complete with all the lights and actions and giggling schoolgirls! Maybe even some DDR machines and other "music games" to the side and whatnot. From: someone Is it just an expensive past-time, are they rich, or do they make real world money out of it?
Ah, that's one of the wonders of SL: it's your life to live. So yes, for some people, they pour a lot of money and don't money back, others have quite a bit of offline wealth to begin with, and some do SL for either a parttime, or rarer but becoming increasingly possible, a fulltime living. I would think that for most people, fun (defined by the individual) is pretty important though. Don't want it to become drudgework, after all. I would highly, highly recommend you get to know current games mavens in SL such as Tony Tigereye and Antagonistic Protagonist. They have oodles of experience and have really made games of chance in SL really work for them. Study their casinos and layouts and do a find for "casino" under FIND ---> PLACES to get a good idea of how things are in this world. Then you can use that knowledge and apply it towards your own efforts. From: someone Also, I'm not sure how much effort is required to build anything. I hope there is a way to get models into SL. A place like the Ivory Tower of Primitives can help you learn how to build. You can find it at Noyo (209, 187), and of course, hang out in the sandboxes and network with your fellow avatars to get some practical hands-on experience. The Forums, of course, are an open avenue to ask more detailed questions. Take care and have fun!

Hiyas Johny... and welcome! Yeah... First Land is normally pretty icky. It is rare to find folks that stick with their First Land. But, it really is worth getting! See, First Land is CHEAP CHEAP CHEAP. What a lot of us have done is get the First Land while we could.. set it for sale at a small profit.. and use it to practice on while looking around for the plot of our dreams. You may end up making a profit of 2000-3000L$. And.. you get to play with the Land Tools.. which you can't do at the sandboxes and other open areas..

First Land

Been in Sl about a month. Bought my first land right away nice little plot next to a cabin. Priced my land for sale at 6000 just in case I hit the wrong button or some other newb mistake. After about a week the cabin disappeared and a dance club adult entertainment place started to form. to make a long story short I sold for 6000 and now own a very nice plot close to the telehub and on the water. Take your time and learn as much as you can.
Might want to look into the whole prim aspect of owning land as this can restrict what you build. I work with rhino 3D and poser. One small model that I build lets say a car could have 1000 faces each face would translate to 1 prim. If I remember right each 512 plot of land will only support 117 prims. Better learn to work with textures. Good luck IM me in game if you want I'll be glad to help where I can.

Hi, You should rent land and save your money to buy something bigger than 512. You could rent for anywhere from $50-$250 or so for a 512-size plot. IM me if you want help, I have lots of 512s available, or a 1024 which you could get for $300-$350 or so. From: someone After you've bought your parcel, a few words of caution - the median price for selling land right now is about L$4.88 per sq/m. The inherent value of a 512 plot then is L$2,457 maximum, typically you'll see land selling from 3.9 to 4.0, which is L$1996 and L$2,048 respectively. This information is out of date. Depending on whether the 512 is in PG or M, and whether it is well-located or not, i.e. near telehub or waterfront, with good view or bad build, etc. etc. the prices range more like $2999 to $4150. As for the "median price" look at the Linden's page, which actually surprisingly has a figure of 13 plus now, and 6 plus. Amazing. Prices are going up, GOM is going up too. "Median price" is a bit of a fake thing. It's useful to know, but when you're actually looking in-world, you're looking at the postage-stamp page in the center of most sims where some first-landers have sold, and then land barons have scooped them up and set them for resale at $3500-$3500. I would say you shouldn't ever sell first land for under $2100 even in PG, and for $2999 minimum in M.

Rent stalls and walls for $25-$50/week 25-50 prims from Ravenglass Rentals, the mall alternative.

I wonder if the median price includes first-land purchases

Thanks for all your advice.
I got a little section of first land down in Portage. Less than 48 hours later someone bought it for ten time what I paid.
I'll get in contact with the people you mentioned once I get a chance to take a good look at the scripting languafe and get the basics of building and getting material into SL.
Thanks again everyone!

I read about 2 stories high, I saw the green rectangle outlining a first land plot but there was no limit on the height that I saw, is this so???
