Private sim neighborhoods

I keep toying with the idea of buying a sim, but don't like the idea of being in a vast ocean with no neighbors. I like seeing what others are doing with their builds and visiting.

Are there any groups or areas where it's possible to locate a private sim, but have other private sims adjacent? Obviously this would limit expansion, but for many people like myself who aren't building up a land barony that wouldn't be a huge issue at all.

I'm aware that for many people this blows the whole reason for owning a private sim, but there have to be others who enjoy company, even if some are a little crazy. With 8 nearest neighbors, hopefully not all would be crazed psycopaths.

I suppose to make this work, there would have to be a number of these together to build up a critical mass. Kind of a continent of independent city states.

There are several independent continents, but they are usually owned by the same person/group. Examples: Dreamland, Azure Islands, that big Furry continent, and MANY more (some of these may have multiple owners as well). Also, there are clusters with multiple owners, such as the group of islands called the "SL Developer Archipelago". This includes Oceana and Pi Islands, with all the member islands owned by various people (myself, The Fairchangs, Gus Plisskin, etc). The SLDA is for developers and builders for the most part, but I am sure there are people out there willing to link up. You might also specify what your island will be about: residential, commercial, blingclub, fight-battle-war, furry gorean slave trade, whatever. Then you can get with people with like-minded themes.

SL Developer Archipelago sounds interesting, I'll check it out inworld.

I'm planning on using it for myself and family exclusively (no sales or rentals). Mainly it would be for building/scripting and hanging out, with our workshops and shops, and some gallery space for visiting artists.
