Confused about land auctions

I thought that once the auctions of private SIMs started, smaller plots would no longer be available for auction. And yet I see smaller plots being auctioned off alongside entire SIMs.

Could someone explain this? Did I misunderstand the whole concept of the private SIM auctions?

Thanks.

Just speculating, but I think those are probably either recycled land, or land that was already parceled for auction at sub-sim sizes.

Welcome, Centinull, to the forums. The arrival of new people is what gives us hope, as in real life (RL).

In secondlife., the significant ground area is 256m x256m,. which is roughly 64000sq m.
The whole world is divided into squares of this size, each of which is given a unique name, and called a "sim".

These named squares (which are clear in the map) are very significant because computer processing in SL is geographically determined. Each "sim" (or simulator) of 256x256m is the responsibility of a single linux computer, which handles and processes all objects and people within its boundaries. When you cross the boundary between two sims, you may get temporary problems (fall through the floor-vehicle misbehave etc) which result from you being handed from one computer (server) to the next.

In the context of auctions, the management had announced a change, to sell whole "sims" only, instead of lots of smaller bits. People are commenting here that they are surprised, in view of the change of policy, still to see plenty of smaller plots up for auction.
