Well - sorta.

Land on the mainland of SL costs "Lindens" to buy - which are the currency of Second Life.

Since you can buy Lindens with US$ on the website, or alternatively - sell them back for cash... in a sense, yes, you spend real money for land in SL.

To own land in Second Life - you have to aquire it first - which usually involves buying it from another player, or from Linden Labs.

Once you own the land, you have to pay monthly "Taxes" on that land to Linden Land. Those taxes *are* in the form of US Dollars.

If you have a premium account, you can own up to 512 meters of land tax-free. If you go over that, you have to pay what's known as "Tier" - which is a surcharge on your account proportional to the land you own over 512 meters.

There. Clear as mud? :)
