Hey all,
I have discovered that the limit for a sim's population is 40 people. Which got me to wondering. I'll use the First Land example: each sim can be divided into 128 parcels of 512sqm each. If this was done without people purchasing larger parcels, this would give 40 people the ability to be at "home" alone, which would make it impossible for 88 people to access their own land. This makes it possible (and even probable with the rapid growth) that we're going to run into the problem of people not even being able to use their own land (even if there are no massive clubs on the sim) just because other people are enjoying theirs.
There have been a couple of times that I have had ten people over to watch a show at my stage, and it really bothers me now to know that 25% of the sim's total available population was hogged by my little 512sqm parcel, which is less than one percent of the sim!
If I understand correctly, the average person:land ratio on a sim is one person per approx. 1638sqm of land, which means I would have to own 16,384sqm of land in order to not feel guilty about hogging resources and possibly locking someone out of their own land when I play a little show at my stage for ten of my friends. Well, nine, if I count myself. This would cost me $75US a month.
Yikes.
I really do hope that sim population is being worked on, instead of band-aid solutions like building on borders and just adding more sims.

that doesn't really make sense though, some private sims and stuff for example Edge or IDP (Icedragon's Playpen) have way more than 40 people on the sim at once.
There's also the issue that even if that were the case it still doesn't seem to do anything about lag since one person can deny effective access to a sim if they want to be a jerk about it, I've been the victim of such tactics several times.

I am under the impression that private sims can hold more people, that's why I used First Land as an example. If the First Land sim was cut into 512sqm parcels, only 1/3 of the land owners could be "home" (and without company) at one time.

I hate to say it but most first land either is in desolate places that either never develop or and up develop into places where most people wouldn't want to live anyway, yes I realize that most land was first land to somebody at one time or another and I mean mainland only since private sims and island work differently.

Most First Land sims experience the population boom within the first three to five or so days.
After that, Firstlanders tend to buy the land next to them from fellow Firstlanders, and increase their block sizes to 1024 or greater. To top that off, other people will buy chunks of First Land as well, generally keeping it off the market a few days (so new people selling around them won't up their land prices to match) until there's little other land left for sale and then reprice and sell for profit. First Land sims tend to be the most lucrative business in land, because of the sheer number of people in the sim looking for land to expand, which is often rare, so it drives the value of First Land sims sky high.
This buying of land tends to alleviate the problem of sim crowding for the most part, and 2/3 of the population will have sold their land within two weeks and moved to more stable land, quieter land, or "greener" pastures.

OK, a question for those who have much more experience than I:
What is the average number of parcels on a mainland sim? Ballpark figure. Or does this vary too much?

From: Chronic Skronski What is the average number of parcels on a mainland sim? Ballpark figure. Or does this vary too much? I don't know the answer to this, but as for the initial question, the other answers seem to be skirting the hypothetical that it is possible, given a certain plot configuration, to be shut out of your own land by nothing more than having people "in residence". I believe the issue regarding a well attended club's impact on a sim has been addressed in another thread. This is an interesting question as it poses the same basic result, but from residents doing nothing more than the minimum of logging in at their home location. It seems a long way off given the state of the current active population, but it is still an interesting question.

I think it varies too much, depending on the type of sim it is, the terrain, etc.
In two sims I have land in, there's only several plots in each. A previous sim I moved from, had only several plots, but if I were going to try to average..... I'd say 15-20 owners per sim, most of whom are not going to be online at the same time or even at home in sim at the same time.

Or does this vary too much? it does vary greatly http://www.dragonkeen.com/landmapyou can see the parcel ownership for youself most seem around 20-30 owners, but maybe later ill add an average function to that to show what it is actually, a sim supports 4096 land owners (65536 / 16 = 4096) 16sqm is the smallest you can own. Most sims the agent limit of 40 is ok, rarely do you run into the "sim is full" kinda errors
