Sinks Flow Faster Than Sources in SL?

Using Cory Linden's (rather surprising) data from two months ago we get:

PER DAY:
68,741 articles of clothing
60,580 texture uploads
19,176 animation uploads
13,723 snapshots
3,759 sound uploads
---------------------------------
165,979 TOTAL
---------------------------------
@ L$10 each:
L$1,659,790 a day spent to upload textures, animations, and sounds

Using today's population count of 156,740, that means, on average each player spends L$10(.5894) per day in upload costs. For a week, it totals L$74, or $24 more than the basic stippend payment for the same period.

This doesn't include the misc sinks in the form of land advertisement costs or the charge for being in the classifieds, as those numbers weren't provided.

I also don't have the breakdown of Basic to Premium accounts available to me, so I don't know how many people have the L$500/wk and how many have the L$50/wk. If 95% of accounts are Basic, then Sinks out-flow Sources in Second Life, for sure.

If the Premium plans account for more than 5% of the populous, then I'd have to know the amount of lindens that are spent on the misc sinks to tell which flow is faster.

But from this peek, it looks like our Sources and Sinks are pretty evenly matched. Any instability in the L$ market will not be due to stipends.

Actually he said, "In a day, the following percentage of residents who logged in created at least one inventory item of each type:"

Nice numbers, but it would be much better to know the
"Average" over a Month, not a (1) Day Snapshot.

Your numbers are fluffy Tiger.. Full of Linden Goose Feathers.

It's the only source available, but fluffy or not, they paint a pretty stable picture. All the more so since I'm using two-month old numbers and comparing them to the current population count. If the 20%/month growth has been constant since those numbers were collected, then the population back then would have been closer to 105,000. But I was willing to err or the side of caution because of the "fluffiness" of the source numbers.

The sky isn't falling -- here are the supports that are holding it up. Feel free to discuss how thick those supports are, how sturdy their contruction is, if they are earthquake proof, or how fast they'll rust... But they ARE there and the sky isn't going to fall tomorrow. :)

Actually, he said "Another way of looking at the data is to see how many of each asset type is created, again, within one day:"

Then he listed the numbers that Tiger provided.

Cory did not state if this was a high water mark day or not, so I'm inclined to believe it was probably a random sample. Additional samples, and daily average over the month would be nice. But unless Linden or you, make more data publically available -- then it's the only concrete data we have. And I'd rather trust the Linden data then RBD's data.

To add a few more numbers on the fire, there are currently 695 "Places" listed when searching for "ren" and there 571 places listed when searching for "fre" :: I picked those two because of RENtals and FREe stuff. There is no way to get a listing of the total number of places listed, because you must search with at least 3 letters -- and there is no way of determining overlaps.

If I remember correctly, thats L$30 per place per week, for at least another L$20,850 sink each week.

And a simple excel worksheet, and 20 minutes later we have:

1,222 Classified Advertisements listed for a total of L$872,180

I forget, is that weekly?

Oh and if anyone wants my data, I'm not going to hide it and try charging for it -- just IM me in game and I'll drop a notecard with the data in it to you.

actually you're mis-interpretting the data.

that's not uploads... that's additions to inventory... that is to say that includes pre-existing textures, animations, snapshots, and sounds that people add to their inventory.

From: cory linden
By inventory creation, I mean the creation of a new inventory item within a given time period, so this includes both new inventory items created by building, uploading, etc, as well as items gained as gifts or via purchases.

It's unclear if that statement from the first section of percentages applies to the second set of hard numbers. It is possible, however.

I believe that no-mod textures (which most are) will not create a new asset, but will retain their existing UUID. So picking up a box of 100 free no-mod textures wouldn't add to this count. Uploading them would.

[strike]i think it's fairly clear that cory is talking about inventory counts as opposed to uuid/db counts.[/strike]

hmm... maybe not...

Another way of looking at the data is to see how many of each asset type is created, again, within one day:
That's the text for the numbers I used. This implies he is talking about creating assets, not just adding references into player's inventory lists. But everyone seems determined to see these numbers differently...

i still don't think he's talking assets... but he could be.

hmm... further down that page, there is an unanswered question in the comments about his issues of assets vs. inventory.

At least every one else in the forum is trying to deal with or find real data. RBD is only posting blank negative statements of generalities.

Gee, maybe because he's an alt account trolling for responses?

He'd go away if you stopped listening to him.
