Is it possible for me to buy my 512L first land, put a house on it and furnish it for the normal premium price? There seem to be so few prims available that I'm not sure. I dont' want to pay more per month b/c I'm not sure how often I'll be playing, but I'd like to have something nice. I'd even buy non-SL land but would prefer not to have to pay more then the normal premium price per month.

For the same reason I'd rather not rent, it's the same as paying more per month.

This whole land and building thing seem to be a bit daunting for the first time person. So many are using it to make money. I'm just wanting to have a place to call home for the moment.

Quite possible.

But renting is the best bang for the buck if you're not sure how long you'll be here.

I invite you to attend one of my Land Ownership 101 classes, if you can.

It is perfectly possible to live comfortably on 512 m2 of land. Many prefab houses are sold with that in mind, fitting nicely within the area and using 30 prims or less. (Warning: the LL-created houses that are available free at telehubs were created before the current prims-per-area system, and will not leave you enough prims for furnishings or fit nicely on a First Land lot).

I advise you to try a First Land lot, and see how it goes. If it's not for you, you can sell it before your first month is up (your neighbors will doubtless be only too eager to give you a good price for it), downgrade to basic and cash out the profit. If you do like it, then you have the choice of staying as you are, or tiering up and perhaps buying out a neighbor yourself! Remember, tier commitment is only for a month at a time.

Update

Well, I did get my first land and found a very nice house at Camelot Creations (I think) that was 40 prims. I have a fence and gazebo, too. I'm still working on furnishing but hopefully I have the prims needed. At least this way I'm not paying rent, and I found a very comfortable plot of land.

Thank you for your replies =)

I'm so curious to know how you obtain furniture and if you create it with prims, did you find or use a pattern of sorts to guide you? Thanks for your help. I'm a real new newbie. LOL! I'm not a premium member yet...just trying to figure out if this will turn out to be a very expensive way to play :-)

When do you hold classes?

I too am interested in learning about land ownership. I live on the east coast of the US. What time are you classes and what days? I'd love to attend.

My next class will be tomorrow, Tuesday November 15th at 5:00 pm game time (PST).

We can also talk about how to acquire furniture :) At one time I held building classes in which the students made coffee tables as their exercise, but I haven't done this for a while.

Wonderful...that would be 8PM eastern for me, and a perfect time! Where will the class be held. I'm so new that I haven't even learned how to put new names in my IM yet...sigh. Will your class be available to read in the events line-up? Thank you so much for letting me know.

I placed the class in the events list last night, and it will be held at Derwent 8. 175.

I look forward to meeting you! If you stick around after class to ask even more questions, you may get sucked into attending trivia too! :) (Or we could just make a coffee table together in the 30 minutes between events!)

I probably won't be able to hang out long at all....sigh...I get up at 5AM and I'm on eastern time...so I'm three hours later than you are. BUT...I'm going to teleport over and hopefull catch the as much as I can. Again thanks so much for holding this class :-) I wish I could have seen you do the coffee table...I have never seen anything made yet.

To IM someone whose name you know, go to Find/People and type their name into the search box. Then click on their name when it comes up, and there'll be an IM button below their profile when it shows up.

If you turn up for class early, I'll make a table for you too :)

Yep. I'm newish here myself but have been cooking up some simple, low-prim and different houses for my own use and probably for sale. I think the lowest prim count I got on a usable dwelling was 25, but it had built some in furnishings (bed and work desk) as well as some stuff like shutters and doors. It is possible and a lot easier if you don't mind a non-traditional structure. Roof, gables, fences... all eat prims :)

There is also a lot of low-prim furniture out there, much of it free.
