I vote that LindenLabs take a close look at the twenty or so odd sims that never ever ever have any traffic, and level them. Then, open up those areas to new residents for land purchasing rights.
Some of us can't afford to have two landlords in real life.

I love them void sims It's almost the only place in SL where people can decently sail.

Hear, hear. It's nice to have a place to fly around and admire the scenery without estimating lag times so you can steer properly.

From: Lordfly Digeridoo The people that live in them might mind. Not if they haven't been on SL for so long that they've fallen behind on their sim payment... ...or have had their sim payment automatically credited to their account to an empty debit card, causing them to overdraft, then never recovering from it, going bankrupt, evicted, become homeless....and well you get the general outragously silly hypathetical situation.

You are upset about people that pay for a server running a sim but bring no lag to the sim? I personally prefer to "live" in sims with less traffic, as I can do things without lag, without annoying shouts about how sexy someone is, and without constant messages of the money ball selecting a winner.

No. I'm annoyed..not upset, annoyed.. That I can't buy a plot of land any more without having to pay a RL monthly fee to a Virtual Corproration. It's enough that I will be paying LL for the benefit of greater land. So..when I see sims that are constantly at 0 occupancies and studded with empty buildings I wonder why LL won't just demolish everything and reopen those lands. Though, that question has been answered..Intellectual Property rights. So it's a non issue.

In retrospect, I may be using the wrong term. By "sim" I mean land on the mainland..not Islands.

The answer isn't "intellectual property rights" except maybe in a really loose sense. The real answer is "because people are paying for those resources, and LL doesn't put many restrictions on what they do with them." Take my own land in Europa, for example. I go through stretches where I don't log on for a couple months at a time. But I'm still paying LL over US$100/month for those resources. My land isn't wall to wall buildings (it's got a small prefab house and a couple other structures on about 18km2--and no skyboxes ). I don't mind if other people have wild parties in the hot springs or wander around my virtual house looking at the art on the walls when I'm not there, but I do expect that as long as LL is billing me, the contents of that land will remain as I left them. I'm also not sure about why you can't find any land to buy. I regularly browse around the map with "for sale" turned on, and there are white boxes of various sizes all over the place on the mainland.
