Man, tier is *low* in the real world.

I like the part how they mention very quickly that the island already has several residents seeking an idealogical life. Why don't these residents have ownership of the land? What are you supposed to do, just kick them off in the middle of the Pacific? Something seems a bit fishy here. You are right though, seems like a good deal.

After living in Hawaii for two years, I myself would never ever want to live on an island in the Pacific. Ecspecially an island here on the map.

Where is this mainland that is supposed to be 10 miles away?

Mine! Hands off! I saw it first! My deposits already in the post!

And yes you can kick people off into the pacific, with the cunning use of flags!

But what if it is a place with million of people who ... <brief shudder> ... don't have a flag. Wouldn't you need something, like maybe a gun? Of course, its hard to take a man serious when he is wearing high heels and a dress as well.

I think that's referring to Hunga Attol. This is a little chunk of land in the middle of a bigger (but still small) chunk of land.

I suspect that's a slightly bigger (but still small) chunk of land called Tonga.

Life is very different on the islands. I'm guessing Tonga is a bit more formal than most; I've never been there.

Yet the people who *least* likely believe they could 'stand' island life are the first to dance and sing around a beach fire with new friends, clothes absent. Within days of arrival.

Depends on local culture. On some islands the only inhibition to be found is the mosquito population. Maybe not in Tonga though.

Tonga is a monarchy with strong cultural traditions; I doubt you would own the land outright and be able to do just anything with it.

But even so, it's worthwhile talking to someone who has experienced islander life before making any presumption. If I had the time to visit that island and the money, I'd consider buying in Tonga very seriously.

You're not buying the whole island, just 3 acres out of 800. I'd love to have it if I owned the entire island.

Reading this just reminded me of something. Anyone hear of the Republic of Minerva? I wonder how that would've turned out had the Tongan government left it alone. Its proposed Constitution can also be found online somewhere: http://www.imperial-collection.net/minerva.html

I can't think of a more fitting fate for such a project other than immediate destruction.

Building on top of such precious and rare shallow reefs is a crime against all of earth's inhabitants.

It only takes one look at such reefs to understand why.

Bah, Minerva used gold in their coin too. Gold is an amazingly useful metal for all kinds of scientific and engineering tasks, yet gold is rare. There is only 4000 cubic miles of gold ever mined in history. There's enough that I don't mind that many people will plate jewelry with gold or even make solid gold jewelry, but the thing I don't understand is the urge to waste it in coins or in reserves. What good is gold sitting in a fort protected from the world that wants to use it for all the many things it can be used for. What good is it in a coin where it will sit in someone's pocket or jar. I say the governments of the world should sell every ounce of gold they owns and get the gold into the hands of people that will actually use the stuff. We know now that paper can work as money, if the people put faith in the government and economy that prints it. I have a good cause to go with save the trees. Save the gold!

Do they have broadband? I mean tropical beaches and nekkie dancing is all very good.. but I have to stick with the essentials. :D

Actually, when Ferran and I moved to Belize we carefully checked out the Internet connectivity first, then the 90+ brands of rum.

So you actually found a service provider then? S'great!

Jillian an I have been talking about moving to Belize forever (Punta Gorda, region). Hey? Save us a spot on the beach we'll bring a few more bottles of Ron del Barrilito, finest rum in Puerto Rico!

People are more important than a reef, and there's no small number of them in that region of the world. A nation like this nearby would've been a boon to the economies of Tonga and Fiji, and besides, these reefs were outside of Tonga's territorial waters. They had no right to just go there and take it. This site will give you a few more details: http://www.oysters.builderspot.com/page/page/1211277.htm

You might also try typing "Republic of Minerva" (including the 2 quotes) into Google...

Evening,

<mod>

As interesting as all this is (and *has* been enlightening, thank y'all!), it's not really relevant to SL. Not talking about virtual land in SL (as per the sticky thread), but Real Land; In particular the last half-dozen or so...

If y'all can switch gears to how this relates to SL land, I'll be willing to leave it here. Otherwise it will move to off-topic.

</mod>

Much Appreciated,
