Well nice to see the economy so stable and the linden dropping back to 280 as so many of you predicted with the dwell notification!

I predict after visiting many free content locations that things will get a lot worse in the next 8 weeks due to the halving and the end of dwell. Why? Because I have now visited many free content places in world and talked with the owners: many will reduce their land quota over the next few weeks now dwell has been halved. Some will pull free content entirely; others will carry on as they enjoy it and can afford the RL financial loss. Many are angry that when they do sell off land they will loose out against the original cost due to the collapsing Linden. There also seams to be a feeling that as they are loosing out they may as well write of the land loss, get shut of the land at any cost, to make sure the next tier payment is reduced to what they can afford to sacrifice from RL.

All this will lead to an accelerated collapse of the Linden during the next 2 months, I seriously expect to see 350/1 rate by mid June. Linden labs will aslo realise this and I would expect them to target a future rate of 350/1 as a stable rate, meaning everyone who has already invested in 2ndlife is shafted.

Add the "benefit" of eliminating any incentive to builders to build eye candy stuff that makes SL beautiful. Wow... what an achievement.

Dwell started very badly without proper planning to target the genuine content creation, and ended even in worse shape, haphazardly without forethought of its impact on economyas well as content creation in SL.

Hey... do LL have a board room where they could sit and brainstorm, make harsh critical assaults on any policy they are going to opt and analyse its pros and cons before implementing it. I doubt they have one.

No offence, intentions are all well.
----------------------------------------------------

Just wondering, would the end of dwell bring slide in land market? what do you think guys? would it be good or bad?

Hmm...my sales are way up and my free content supported by those sales is not going anywhere anytime soon. In fact, I'm looking for more land in my sim to expand my free content....

I don't suppose it occurs to anyone that the current L collapse is being driven by a few high income residents cashing out because they are pissed about the removal of DI and this is their way of letting LL know just how pissed they are? In the same way that p2p teleporting changed the SL business model and there was a lot of trauma involving land and business near telehubs, the removal of DI and dwell is pushing a little market correction as the players who relied on those things restructure. No point in saying the sky is falling just yet, this will take a few months to shake out, just like p2p teleporting did and just like removal of the ratings bonus did.

I hate saying I told you so - but a simple analysis of the data they did provide suggested that halving dwell would have very little effect on the exchange rate, which I did say. This is definitely one time I wish the numbers had lied though.

Although I'm only speaking for me, dwell won't really change my business or personal activities. Sure a bit of extra spending money every day is nice - but it is, for me any way, a few Lindens a day (about 40 at best I think) which isn't going to change my spending etc. appreciably. It's never been enough to buy anything I'm interested in, not for a long time anyway.

I don't make a habit of selling freebies mind, but I do sell a fair amount of stuff at low prices, and some freebies or $1 items, that won't be changing just 'cos dwell goes away.

end of dwell would hardly be affecting anyone personally. It didn't bother me too. but, the question is how it would affect the content creation in SL. Maybe not much, or maybe it would. many people would still be creating stuff for their own pleasure but definitely there d be less advertising of such places as people don't see any reason to spend on advertising to attract people unless they are selling stuff. That means, the quality builds for pure enjoyment and entertainment would get a hit, or at least would go obscure. From now on, Popular places would only be showing malls and shops and not really the good build to explore.

There wasn't a chance for the removal of dwell to impact the market, it got overwhelmed by LL's announcement about selling Lindens directly. Before that announcement, it actually was starting to strengthen a little. Anyway, it was never going to be one day they stop dwell, the subsequent day, all is well on the Lindex. These things take time to take effect.

LL has clouded and diluded this situation. Pathetic approach to create lindens to pay dwell.
LL should have pulled our monthly US dollars to pay dwell... and dwell needs to exist.. or some form of program that supprts event based businesses... just as they do for instructors.

It was a very schmucky thing to do to create the dwell program, pay dwell with non-existant lindens, and then remove dwell....

People should charge for events just like they do RL.

Pay to see a movie.... Pay to hear some music... Pay to goto a theme park... etc. etc. etc.

The problem is, you don't know if you're paying for something worth paying for or a crappy experience. Kind of like if you were in a room with lots of doors, and in front of each door someone is barking for your attention. "Come to my place. I can't show you what's inside, cuz then you wouldn't pay. But trust me; it's worth the money. No refunds."
Is it something amazing and worth the cost? Is it a crappy experience, maybe some old junk that people wouldn't bother to see or experience even if it were free? You won't know until you pay.
When I go to the theater, it's true that I don't know if the movie will be great or suck. But I at least know what kind of theater experience to expect. Same for a concert, or a theme park visit. Not so much for Second Life events.

Let's get real. You don't know that the RL movie you just paid 10 bucks to see is not going to be crap either. You take a punt on it.

So you pay 10L to get in somewhere and it blows. So what? The next place might rock.

I dont think that you can judge the consequences of dwell going yet especially with Lindens TOS announcement happening at the same time.

If it meant that some cashed up players decided to sell their linden reserves and change their play this could depress the Linden but would change things for the positive in the longer run.

Ending dwell is hurting the ones that rely on events for thier money making, I.E. the clubs, that offer DJ's a social outlet, to meet and greet others..

What was in mind when they said 'content providers'. As I am seeing a club suffer.. the club is content, and the builder being the provider of such..

The owner has resorted to cutting back on thier events due to the ending of dwell, and has less of a motavation of putting on events.

I know dwell mostly to where the people went... how would this club owner survive without dwell.

Your rant is somewhat premature.

You many want to wait until they actually end it before making assessments on how it may have affected the economy. Dwell payments are still being earned and received right now, granted at a lesser degree, but it's still being paid out.

Ending dwell was like putting one's finger in one hole of a Dutch dike. The real story is the fact that L$60,000,000.00 of new L$ are printed EVERY MONTH.

Thats radical L$ supply growth.

Is it? What is the total number of L$ in circulation? Also, how does this compare with the rate of growth in land and other buyable things?

If you mention the one figure without mentioning the other two, you're just making noise. It's not a meaningful number in the absense of that other information.

You may or may not be right -- we just have no way of knowing, based on that one number alone.

***

BTW, why I do keep earning dwell if dwell has ended? Am I getting messages from the future? I've been seeing people say "now that dwell has ended" for weeks, and yet I keep earning it...

Let's all be sensible here. Ending dwell only hurt the camping chairs. That's it.

Any legitimate social space can survive on tips, or on the backing of a few generous individuals.
