Is there a post somewhere or can someone explain the mechanics of a renter paying tier fees directly to Linden Labs even though the land they are renting is owned by a private party? The only thing I know about this is that in only works on non-island (continental) sims.

Thanks.

They pay tier, but to the owner of the sim, not Linden Labs.. Its renting land really.. But some people call it ownership, because they pay an up front buying fee or purchase price, for some reason..

I rent from Hiro Queso, and pay in L$ but I believe you can pay in US if you so choose.. And no purchase price

Although something like Neualtenburg is an exception, since it's essentially a "sim co-op" run in the same manner as a housing co-op (registered in the real world and with a legal presence) and so, while the estate is linked to one avatar for technical reasons, everybody involved really does own a share of the place.

Good point, sorry my knowledge on Neualtenburg is severly limited.. But it seems like a wonderful place :)

I think the Hiro Queso is different, because those are private islands. There's a different mechanism in place for continental parcels.

I'm not sure what you mean, going back to your origional post..

The only person who can pay tier to LL is the person who owns the land, as I understand it..

Unless you use a group and donate tier.. I suppose..

Well, how do you use a group and donate tier payments?

Well you could rent tier from someone else by adding them to your group, having them donate their tier, and then any officer in the group could buy land.. But that still wouldn't fit the description of what you said..

What would be the point in renting if you're still paying tier to LL?

Well, how do you use a group and donate tier payments?

You donate your tier to the group, as it's the group that owns the land. All that matters is that there is enough tier to cover the land holdings of the group, it doesn't matter if one person donates all their tier, or if its shared between members.

The fact you are donating your tier to a group has no effect on your obligation to continue paying LL for your tier.

Group ownership was originally intended to provide a way of people being able to share land, and share the land fees on it. There is a bonus with group ownership - you can hold 10% more land on your tier. This has led to many individuals grouping their land with 2 other alternate accounts :)

If you are asking about a form of renting that involves donating your tier to a group (and not on private estate land), you are best off speaking to the person offering this, as I can only speculate and will probably end up getting it horribly wrong :p
