Last night I was looking at the Land For Sale and saw a 9k plot on sale for $L9k. At first I thought, oh silly newbie. But then I saw the person had started back in May of 2004. So then I thought oh, someone's tiering down, or buying an island and needs to get rid of this quick. It seemed like a cutesy type price, 9k for 9k. I had started to IM the person but after the hi and I saw they were offline, I thought okay, I'll take it. Because if I didn't, someone else would while I was trying to be thorough.
I IM'ed some friends and borrowed some money. Right after I bought it, I had to tier up to the $75 level. Then the previous owner shows up and she's like Thank you and then she was asking me if I wanted some other land across the way.
So now I'm waiting for her to take her stuff off of my land and I ask her for the waterfall and she's saying oh you need a custom one. And I say oh this one works right well here. Then she says you bought that land. So now she's saying it was a glitch and she meant to sell another piece.
This was when I asked her if she had checked the listing? Maybe I'm silly or cautious, but I think if I put some land up for sale, the first thing I would do is check the listing. See how it looked and compare the price per m2 with the rest of the listing. But she said she didn't check.
Then she asked me to sell her land back to her. Now I was in a quandry. If I sell the land back, I'm stuck with tier fees and no land. When I pointed that out, she offered to pay the $75. I suggested we call a Linden and we did and he showed up and said write billing, which I did. I got an email today that they would reverse my tier. So other some time and a bit of dreaming that got squashed, I guess it turned out all right. I've set it for her to buy it back at the price I bought it.
But my point of posting is to urge people to check the listing after putting some land for sale and you can save a lot of grief. Double check, even triple check.

Thanks for sharing that story, Dennie. Someday will there be an almanac compiled of tales like this? I think it's great practical history we can all learn from.

that's a good warning dennie.
i really think LL should add an optional confirmation button which states the price and L$/m2 rate at which land is being sold to protect land owners and land sellers as well.
i once found 7000 m2 mature island for 9000L$. i knew it had to be a mistake and picked it up for the owner before someone else did and waited for her to log in to return it to her.
in the few stories like this that have popped up on the forum, LL has returned the negligent player the land. i think adding an optional safety feature on the land selling would help promote land ownership. i truly believe many players are simply too afraid of accidentally selling their land that they are hesitant to tier up.
i think most people who play sl are fair and honest. although many are enterprising (like myself) i doubt many are here to nickle and dime each other or cheat each other. i think the demographic of SL, the tier owning one, is likely not a starving one. my experiences with mistakes like this have always been resolved fairly and amicably.

Good for you for agreeing to sell it back. Most around here would say, "You snooze, you lose."

That land was owned by one a family of friends who I am proud to be with and know and we have our land all together. This debarcle could well have been disastrous for all of us and would have meant us all selling up and moving, no mean feat considering we all have extensive builds. Even though I wasn't there when it happened I did hear all about it ! I cant thank you enough Dennie for having the humanity to sell it back to the original owner.
