I have come to understand people cringe at the thought of using prims to "make land" imagining "floating astroturf". But I was wondering if anyone has any good examples of using prims to make realistic land? I think I am doing well so far, but could use some ideas to mix it up a little.

I've dabbled in prim terraforming on two fronts.
The first was an application of the 3D importer I made earlier this year. It can "mimic" the terrain mesh of a region to roughly 1:1. Quite handy, but not for release due to the possibility of prim abuse. The second was an application of Primmies that utilizes "random" terrain generation. That's still on display in Games1, though the 1.7 patch threw off a lot of the timing. It looks like Swiss Cheese when the sim is loaded now. _____________________

This sounds cool - so you could do the "dig a basement" thing and have the overlying "ground" look a little better than the usual "bunch of 10x10 cubes with a terrain texture" deal? _____________________

Pretty much, yes. But be warned, the prim cost is usually pretty steep.
I think I accidentally dropped it from my profile, but I have some land in Rose that demonstrates this. Look for a little hut with a waterfall, then go underneath... _____________________

Look for a little hut with a waterfall, then go underneath... Well, if I did this, I'd probably (a) sacrifice 1:1 accuracy for less prim-usage and (b) be doing it on a large enough plot/small enough scale that this wasn't too much of an issue. _____________________

Interesting and well regarded prim usage

The former location of Practical Magic was considered to be an unique and beautiful site. Keith Extraordinaire took my words and made them sing by creating and texturing prims to give the location a unique "in the woods" feel.
The work he did was and still is exceptional. What most do not realize is there was a hidden spot within the grounds, created by prims and textures. The landscaping was a joint vendor between Keith and Angel Marcas. Keith's use of prims and textures to landscape is a growing and continous thing, culminating in the Blight-Be_Gone walls that he sells at his store on Serenite. Check out the former home of Practical Magic and see what I mean. Btw, this isn't just my opinion, it was shared by some of the Lindens as well, when they chose Practical Magic as a "Top Pick."
