Slightly different from the usual dead cat dance/bounce topics... from https://secondlife.com/currency/economy.phpUpload Charges: 6,881,725 (june) 6,057,171 (july) this is a bit over 10% drop (technically 12 or so, but there's been couple days when SL was down and couple days for july still left) ... plus, in the time it happened there's been some 15% or so population growth -- i don't have last month 'logged-in users' data at hand to do any more detailed comparison here. Anyway, money spent on uploads isn't really best data to judge level of activity, but it does indicate there's been noticeable drop in amount of textures (new clothes, skins, new building textures) animations and sounds injected into SL. Just mildly curious if this can be treated as effect of number of content creators becoming fed up with what they perceive as LL's hesitance to provide them with protection of their rights, and giving up or taking a break ... or maybe something else. (i realize there's been some extra cuts on stipends and such in the meantime, but that doesn't affect people already present in SL, and the expenditure drop goes beyond what could be explained as new residents without a single L$ being unable to upload anything)

I'm going with the 'summer' hypothesis. I might be more interested in hiding in my climate controlled home office, but I think the general populace (even in SL) goes out and has some fun in the sun this time of year.

Uhm. We still have ~10% of july ahead of us. 6,057,171*10%+6,057,171 is about the same as we had in June.

Well that killed the thread. The fact that none of the posters, myself included, had any inclination to go out in the sunshine wasn't helping the theory either.

As a Result I've prety much stopped work on anything new. Between Sl's mismanaged economy, lack of making employers pay employees, and thier continued protection of freebie resellers, along with some prety bad bugs that really screw content creastors, I figure what's the point now.

Actually, considering the number of (real) new accounts one might think that upload charges should generally climb. So even if the number of uploads stays the same, that's a percentage loss to my mind. I have certainly been out and about. Sadly, the waves have been a bit nonexistent lately, plus other RL responsibilities have meant that I haven't been surfing for a good while. I can hardly wait; I have been standing on the shore looking at glassy water for far too long. I've especially been craving some night surfing; nothing quite like it.

Re: Summer.
I am not to sure if its to do with SL members decided to go throw themselves in frount of the sun... or if they now have children underfoot and taking up time.
the avaerage age of users in SL would suggest that those who would be most inclined to be the type of SL user to be the creators of stuff, would also be the ones most likely to have family committments.
best way to check... compare figures with Xmas/ThansGiving back the last few years.

Summer slow down?
07-29-2006 10:25
It would appear that the summer vacation season is beginning to have an affect on the total volume of L$ traded on the LindeX. I also am seeing a slight reduction in the peak number of residents online when that number has climbed steadly for ththe few months I have been tracking it barring grid closures. It will be interesting to see just where the exchange rate ends up this weekend because it has been dropping and should break through L$300/1 barrier given the same volume of market buys versus the volume of limit sells as yesterday.

Upload charges: 6,881,725 (June) vs. 7,198,181 (July) = ~5% increase. There was no end of the month surge, it's just that figures tend to be at least 10% down four days before the end of the month (the OP was posting using figures thru the 27th). Not surprising given that 3 days is about 10% of an ~30 day month. Considering the downtime and the new snapshot interface which is probably slowing down snapshot uploads, a mere 5% increase is understandable... In the interest of not continuing the campaign of spurious mathematics, it should be noted that July had 31 days vs. June's 30, so although there was an increase in productivity, it wasn't really a 5% increase adjusted for equal periods of time. (Calculating the actual productivity increase I'll leave as an exercise to the reader. )
