I purchased a 4096 plot and sold off the 944 size. Tried to move to what I was wanting and understood was appropriate, which was the $25/month or 4096 tier. It is charging me $40 and saying "you can acquire up to 512m"...what do I need to change? I don't want the higher tier and 512. The sale of the other went through, I got the money...what did I miss?

1. You sold a 944 plot 2. You tiered up and bought a 4096 plot. Your tier is now 4096.
The 512 that a premium account gives you is still available.

Did you buy the 4096 before or after you sold the other plot? If you had both at the same time for even a little while during the past month, it was charge you the tier value of the highest amount of land you owned within the past month.

I DID sell the 944 after, yes, and realized I screwed that up (gotta love being a newbie). And I now understand, I will have to pay $40 for this month. However I'm still confused. When I go to "my land" it says I am at the $40 and "allowed land is 4608" so I have 512 available to purchase. I want only the 4096...what do I need to do to get there? I was informed to tier down next month and it will go to $25, but what about that 512 I don't want? Must be missing something simple here.

Whatever tier you have, the 512 is added to it, as your tier is in addition to your premium account.

I see..okey..so, next month, I should be at the $25 if I understand that right, ignore the 512. The site won't let me "tier down" to $25 right now. So one more question then...when should I do that, to avoid another month of $40? First day of the month?

You are only charged for what you use of your tier in each billing cycle. I could increase my available tier up to a full sim, own only 512m2, and only be charged for the 512m2.

I got bitterly burned like that in my first 30 days when I merely tried to put land from an individual to a group where the tier could be shared with friends. I wound up getting double-tiered and double-billed a whopping amount because it put me way up into a bigger tier jump. The problem had to do evidently with the failure of the system to update the group donations that had put in first, to reflect the capacity to absorb the land.
It was the same piece of land, and it got billed twice. I howled and howled to customer service and got absolutely nowhere. Since then, in making transfers like that or indeed in making any purchase, I find myself taking screenshots of all screen menu options, thinking through everything 100 times, and simply stopping and backing up if the system suddenly generates a "tier-up" message.
I have found that when this happens, it is possible to back out of that menu seeming to force you to tier-up but ONLY if you have a way in the game to back out of what appears to be a tier-up. So that could mean that there isn't enough donation in the group or whatever.
Since having this horrible experience, I've tried to think of in-game remedies. And I think one of the ways might be if you are finding yourself in this forced-tier-up emergency is to have the parcel of land put in a group, even just temporarily with friends who have some tier, or with an alt account (it's cheaper to spend $9.95 then $75). Then you can revise the purchase to be a group purchase, and later shift it around to the individual. This is a very tricky work-around, but I got it to work once.

if your paying a $40 tier or any tier setting land to group doesnt mean you can own more land youmust release your donation to group before buying anymore land or changing your tier unless you dont mind increasing your tier and still donate that land to the group if you wish to decrease your tier and your land holdings fall in a smaller tier bracket just go to the secondlife website and go into your account and tier down the system wont tier you down automaticly you have to do this manualy it will onlylet you tier down if you have less land and it falls into a lower bracket
