A lot of folks are really freaking out over the changes we are going to see today. Just relax, take a deep breath and think about it and wait and see how things go. I know it may seem like the end of the world as we know it, and it actually is, but SL will probably be a much better place in the future. This is sort of big, but its nothing like the changes we saw when version 1.2 was announced. That was major, and the world is so much better now than pre 1.2 If you dig around the archives, you can find the release notes, but not knowing what was prior, it probably wont mean a lot to those that didnt go through it. I was actually sort of upset to see taxes go away, I thought I would have no motivation to work. But, I got a clearer head the next day, changed my tune, rode it out, and it was so much better in the end. Anyway, take a look at us freaking out back in December 2003, when we had a major change to the world. There are a lot of posts on the topic, just as we are seeing now, but this one had a lot of replies and seemed like a good one to get you started with. Have fun. 1.2 Freakout Threadp.s. If you do read this old thread, please bump this post so others have a chance to see it. Thanks

One thing to note. Back then, everyone had to pay US$15 a month to be in SL. We lost a lot of people due to that. If it wasnt for the basic membership, one time US$10 deal, many of them would not have been able to come back and many of us would probably not be here at all now.

ah yes the old holy crap days. the only aspect that's as bad this time around is the way people are talking to philip. it's the sort of hatefulness that ought to be banned. but they didn't do it then and probably won't now either.

Thanks for linking that thread Loki! The history of SL is always facinating to me. Even the parts I lived through. I can't wait to read about this current issue on the SLhistory Wiki one day. hehe..

I am a relative newbie so I speak with no matter of authority on the historical past, but I consider it GENUINELY IMPORTANT that the newcomers of the recent eras take the time to read New World Notes and historical threads like this, so that they may learn from history. Yes, oh yes, Second Life has a rich and varied technocultural tapestry, and learning from it makes us more edumacated and better-off in the long run, especially when it comes to dealing with Toffler-dubbed "accelerative thrust" and the changes that upheave our online society. As it stands, there is no absolute repository for the information that has come before, so tales must be repeated over and over. Thanks Loki for posting this, and for helping to put things in perspective. I'm uncomfortable with the upcoming changes, but I am optimistic for a bright future, my faith in the Lindens but also in my fellow Residents in the Community who I will stand shoulder-to-shoulder with as we do crazy stuff together inworld. More awareness must be brought to learning about SL history... someday, there may be a central repository -- or at least, a more accessible archive where one can learn with the width of experience and the depth of time, sinking back into the folds of the chronology and then being rewarded richly in knowing that there is some security: SL has seen this before, and will see it to it again. And you know what? We'll progress. *hugz*

This might be the right place to build up that "central repository" of SL knowledge. Just want to give y'all a heads up

Yes, for the love of god, if you are or know anyone interested in contributing to the wiki, fire me an IM or something There's a chance that our wiki might be soon integrated with the official one. Robin proposed it to me a while ago, but hasnt said anything since.
