For the 3rd time in 24 hours I've had residence come to me and clame a mistake was made when pricing their land, and wanting their land back....this time was with a 8100M lot in Chief.... I am not giving it back due to a $75 USD tier jump I took to buy the land in the first place...

Any way, my rant is this..what are folks thincking when they press the Confermation button when selling land? It's there for a reason...I encourage folks to very carefully check the prices of the land they are selling befor pressing 2 buttons to publically list it.

I do not think you have to give their money back. There is a confirm button with the amount that the land is to be sold. Yes, they need to pay attention to detail, it may save their life one day!

What was the amount they sold it for? Was it an obvious mistake, like L$1?

Shippou, IMHO you indeed have no obligation in any way--moral or otherwise--to give it back. Unless of course it was L$0 or something really obvious like that...then it's up to what your conscience tells you (as always). Me? I'd give it back at that point, but that's just me.
And yes, I have bought land for that L$0 price...but IM'd the seller immediatly after purchase and gave it back at the same price. Turns out it was a newbie, and is now a good freind...worth every linden I didn't make, btw...(my conscience got the better of my money-grubbing inner-Scrooge, lol.)

Barring that, a deal is a deal--just like there is no crying in baseball...there are no "do-overs" on a land deal.
All sales are understood in general practice to be final. Land is no different.
If it was different, what's stopping me from hitting you with an increase in the original price after the fact when I look at the LindeX and run the numbers?
...if THAT was the general practice, would you buy land at all?
For me, Hell No, or bloody unlikely anyway.

If I priced my land at something silly and someone bought it, I'd expect no less than a "Aw, that's too bad" and wouldn't fault you a bit for it--after all, it was I who entered the price & as said, confirmed it. You're just being a smart new landowner--buy low. *shrugs*

In SL as RL--it costs dearly NOT to pay just a little attention.

Cheers & enjoy your land with a clear conscience. :)

Thats good you all agree.

Don't you think the same principle should apply to the auction process too.....?

Not when you circumvent the system and find a clear, OBVIOUS, exploit.

I don't think so. They were the ones who set it for sale. However, if you want to avoid conflicts like this, I'd suggest looking to see if it's actually a reasonable price for the land.

If it's too low, (Like less than half of the going market rate for that area.) it's likely to be a mistake, and at that point, you are kind of going to have to expect some whining despite the fact that it was their fault that they set it for sale.

I'm curious though, was the land you're talking about in this case unusually far below typical market value for the region? Or was it a reasonable price that the former owner is just whining about now?

I just got this reply in email from Mezentius
From: Mezentius Speculaas

Here is what all the ney sayers in the forums look like when they say that
the Users, who were placed on hold and lands confiscated, were wrong.

Legend:
This is what happened
>> This is the argument being made

I went looking for auction land.
>> Good Luck, Stay in your camp chair. Auctions are only for the Land Barrons.

I got my butt unglued from a camp chair
>> OMG. We cant have this!

I went to a SIM that was in 'Light Blue' on the map
>> NO NO NO STOP!

I looked at ABOUT LAND
>> YOU EVIL MAN!

I got the Auction number
>> Stay Away!

I went to the Web Page
>> He's hacking the web site, with his keboard and
>> web browser, It's an electronic device and the browser is Software designed
>> to attack us, oh no.

I READ the web page
>> Pay no attention to the words on the screen!

I followed the instructions posted on that page
>> WE DIDN'T WANT YOU TO! STOP!

QUOTE: "Yeot 001 (128,128) 58480 m2. Be the first bidder on this land! If
you bid now This auction will end on April 28, 2006 at 18:28 PST.

Place a Bid:
Current Bid: US$ 0.00 Your maximum bid: US$ (PLACE BID)
(Enter 1.00 or more)"

I made a calculation on land tier and figured out what I could afford
>> Oh No, A Calculated Bid, NASTY NASTY!

I found more pieces of Land for Auction
>> WHAT?!? He's Killing Us! Stop Him!

I followed more instructions
>> He Cant! You people arent allowed to follow
>> our instructions!

I bid on Multiple Pieces without tiering up knowing that the auctions were
publicly viewable and others could out bid me at any time
>> That's the Evil Thing doing this! His Brain! Kill His Brain!

... Time Passed..

The Auctions I bid on recieved other bids
>> Oh No. More Brains Following Instructions!

Other people out bid me, MicroDick Dinkens (a Linden Account) outbid me
>> We Will Stop Him! Quick! Drive The price Up!

Prices on some of those auctions went well out of my price range. I won 3
sims, more than I expected
>> He knew it was wrong! He Expected to loose!

I paid on the web page
>> Damn! We Cant Charge him $25 for not claiming
>> the auction! Evil!

I went to the land again and bought it
>> Wait?!? Make Sure To Get His
>> Approval to charge Him Tier! Evil Man!

I sold it
>> AH HAH! He's in it for proffit aganst other players.

I went to the second auction and paid
>> Oh No! He Doesn't Have to Tier
>> Again! He's Foiled US! That's wrong!

I sold It
>> What? He's Made Back in Linden what he Paid In Tier!
>> OMG this is Disaterous!

I went to the third auction and paid
>> What Can He Do Now?!
>> I cant think like Him!?!

I moved my Home Location and donated the land into my family group
>> They're Breeding! Evil!

I answered all questions put to me about it
>> He's Telling Others?!? Oh HeCK NO!

I watched as Linden labs put a hold on my account and 'STOLE' my land and
put it BACK out for sale at auction
>> Ok! He's in the Basket. How many
>> more fish can we induce into spending thier money?

I watched as people like Nimrod ran my name into the dirt.
>> I found the $0 auctions first! I told Linden Labs about it 2 weeks before!
>> I would never do anything to hurt Linden Labs!
>> I learned my lesson in the cornfields!
>> They said they Fixed it!
>> It was only one person! The rest are Alts!
>> He Must have hacked the Auctions. Besides, Linden Labs is above their
>> own rules!
>> He was an evil man he deserves to be banned for life.

I watched as people that I spoke to got their accounts placed on hold because they stood up for me in the forums.
>> They are espousing the idea that we may be wrong! Silence Them!

I watched a commercial for 'The Mind of Mencia' on Comedy Central
>> Fidel Linden, CEO (Communist Enforcement Officer):
>> Our Approval Rating is 100%
>> Voice: 99%
>> Fidel Linden: Ban Him!
>> * BAN *
>> Fidel Linden: Like I said. Our Approval Rating is 100%

I love the way they keep using this phrase - it makes the whole process seem so innocent. People with an understanding of how the exploit worked realise exactly what an understatement this is.

It only makes me think that their other (oft repeated) comments about "checking with a Linden that it was OK" have been similarly understated. (I wonder if Linden still log the last 6 months of in-world IMs and conversation in its entirity... that might be good for a laugh if it comes out in court...)

Don't believe the spin.

I predict that this case will settle outside of court for an undisclosed sim.. err sum. :)

What makes him say this? Just because he was beat in an auction he claims someone is a Linden alt?

but surely, if he was outbid, he didn't get to pay anything...

I'm sure the airfare and lodging alone would be worth more than a couple of sims. I wonder what the legal team's time is worth.

I wonder if it's based on a US$ value of land, equivalent in L$ for sale - that now the L$ rate has changed (and they didn't get round to upping their L$ price) they find out that what was worth $30 is now only worth $29.50 (shock horror) when they cash out their money?
