How do I tell how much land deformation is allowed?

My newbie block was limited to +/- 4 metres. I've seen land that is far more deformed, and I've seen references to +/-40M deformation. How do I find out how far I'll be able deform land prior to buying? I'm moving somewhere bigger, and I'd like to either have control over my land or know my neighbors won't be doing anything extreme with theirs.

Ask..

Most +/- 40m are on private sims I should think..

There were some older lists that went about, BUT - rule of thumb:

Older sims close to the Welcome Area: +/- 40m
Private Islands: +/- 100m
Zermatt and "Event" Sims: Varies
All others, including ALL first land: +/- 4m

And before Anshe busts in here with her first land advertisements, yes, renting in her sim gives special terraforming rights because it's classified "private island." But hers is neither "real" first land, nor maintained directly to/from Linden Lab. As such, some restrictions apply.

This link has a list of all the sims that don't have limits of +-4 meters. As you will see, most sims are limited to +-4 meters. The little land that is limited to +-40meters that is not private islands is very expensive. Private islands on the other hand is +-100 meters. The one mistake I know about on the list is Garmisch. It is no longer +-14 meters, it is now +-4 meters like everywhere else.

Word of warning, land for sale often has already been terraformed (usually flattened) before being listed, so the deformation ranges have likely been partially "used". If this is a bigger plot, you might ask the seller to revert land, or allow you to edit the land before you buy to see if it can work for you. This all depends on the seller of course.
