I find the entire concept of land in SL intriguing. I would venture to guess that most people want land of their own in order to achieve a private place for themselves and their friends.
I, personally, require land because I am addicted to building/scripting/playing with ideas. Sure, it can be done in a sandbox--but then comes the concept of actually selling some of these playthings I've built...and of having a private place in which to build them. The largest curiosity to me, however, is that landmasses continue to expand with essentially no "hard-stop" in sight. Basically, such a thing means that anyone with patience will be able to find any amount of land they desire eventually...and that land-values (which are determinant upon restricted supply and importance of location) are bound to fall over the long-term (especially as long-range teleportation scripts are increasingly implemented). _____________________

My main land is used for a home for me and a few friends/relatives, a temporary camping space for anyone else, a honeymoon cabin rental, a VERY small store for my stuff, sky-high building platforms for me to build on, space for staged events and building events (both games and classes) and just to look at 'cause it's so scenic...
My other bits of land are used as laboratories for my housing builds - I'll buy one, build something to fit the terrain, then sell it off together with whatever I built. My favorite thing in SL is to take a piece of land that looks impossible to live on, and make it liveable - and to do that over and over again with different challenges each time. Am I passionate about land? Of course I am! My tier is a significant proportion of my total (RL and SL income) yet it will be one of the last things I ever give up. _____________________

Well, I can't add groups now that ithe poll is already started. My question to you though, would be what do the groups use the land for?

i have land as a home in SL but also i covet land to make things on. Land and space is room for creativity,to build things that you can share with others, challenges yourself with new, interesting projects and see what can evolve from them.
If i was 5 and this was lego, i'd want to keep my masterpiece on the classroom shelf forever so everyone could see it. i don't want to have to tip the tower back into the box to build something new. ![]() |

I don't see options for 'sexxorzing' or 'just so I can set it to private, put up a security script and annoy the fuck out of people so they come whining in the forums for my amusement'

I voted Getaway/Park. Chatelaine is our combination of personal homes/business ventures/entertainment.
Basically we wanted a private place to call home, seperate parcels for our personal business ventures, and a large open recreational area to enjoy ourselves on and socialize with friends and other players. Basically we never have to leave "home" if we don't want to. So basically, what we wanted, and created was a getaway. Both from our real lives, and so we wouldn't have to hunt all over SL for things to do or to socialize...and we couldn't be happier with what we have created, nor would we change anything about it, as far as overall theme or purpose. We have created our very own virtual world within a virtual world, and for us, that is what is so special and satisfying about SL. |

I use it as private sandbox in the sky and to have a place to keep projects rezzed in-world for a time. There's also a bit of furniture scattered around so my friends don't have to sit on plywood cubes, I guess that qualifies as "home".

Well I didnt vote, mainly because while a part of our land supports rentals/Villas a part also supports our home, one public.. one private

I don't own land any more, so I guess I'm not worthy to respond. But I will anyway just because!
I used to own land. I used to own a lot of land. I had to sell it due to RL problems. I even had to sell most of it at a massive loss, for reasons I won't go into here. Now, I donate my tier to a group. I couldn't afford to buy land now if I wanted to. _____________________

I own land because when I build something I'd like it to stick around for at least a day or two. It is too frustrating to build in sandboxes etc. and have all your work wiped out all the time.
I also like to hold discussions in a place where I can eject griefers on the rare occasions that it is necessary. I like to plant trees. I like a place where I can take my time and experiment a little. I like having a store and discussion setting that doesn't disappear when the owner changes. I should also add that when my L$ income fails to pay my land tier, I'll sell so fast the sim will be spinning. _____________________

In my castle, I will be setting up shop on the main foyer as soon as it's somewhat near finished. So it's "Home" but later "Home+Shop".

I share land with my shop partner, Lora Morgan. I also use it as a studio where I can upload my stuff and test it.

It is interesting that the majority of people in Second Life seem to simply want a place to call home. I'm a person that rarely likes to call one place home in RL, so it is a bit of a shock to me.
