People who rent land sometimes charge less tier cost than linden labs for small plots of land as they can make a saving by paying linden labs tier for large plots of land.

So their customers who rent land from them pay less.

However some people like "owning" the land on the mainland so it cant be taken away from them by anyone but linden labs, so they dont get the reduced teir saving of renting land and dont become customers of the renters.

Couldnt the property barons also offer this service:

1. you create a group for your owned mainland land
2. the property baron contributes tier to the group
3. you pay the property baron for the tier he gives you at a lower rate than if you pay linden labs.

The reason no one has done this yet is the lack of security with group deeded plots on the mainland. If you have many plots deeded to the same group, there is nothing to stop residents snatching land off of each other and selling it. Until the groups are fixed, the only way to do it is to have one group per resident, and we are of course limited to the number of groups we can be a member of.

Ravenglass rentals does rent tier.

Edit: And a note about security and groups. Ravenglass simply joins your group as a standard member and contributes the rented tier. They do not have access to sell your property, although in theory they could build on your land or terraform it -- but I highly doubt any reputable group (like Ravenglass) would do any such thing.

Yes it can be done on a limited basis. My point being that the tier donater can only be a member of so many groups, and so can only offer it to a limited number of people. If and when LL allow us an unlimited or large number of groups, this will be more common place.

edit to add: The security problem was not insinuating that a landlord would take the land. To get around the no. of groups problem, one group could be used for all residents. It's in this work around that security becomes a problem. Even if the landlord is not an officer, all the residents are. You run the risk of residents swiping each other's land.
