In actuality the whole idea of camping chairs is a little silly... and I'm sure people never really think this through to the logical conclusion. If your computer is one of those that stays on all the time anyway, there may be some validity in using camping chairs. But if people leave their computers on overnight just to gain earnings from camping chairs, I wonder if it occurs to them that they're probably paying more in electricity and computer wear and tear than they'll ever make in L$. They should figure up their electricity usage, leave the computer off and use the money to just buy L$. It's a whole lot easier and a whole lot better on the computer. :D

Again, it's that good ol' common sense. LOL

i found this in anoter thread and thought it deserved its own disscushion. it does seem to make a whole lot of sence

so go to it if you wish

It costs roughly 60 cents to run a (fairly inefficent 300W) PC for 24 hours.

At current lindex rates, 60 cents works out at around 166L$

Therefore, if you can camp for L$7/hour (or higher), you're in profit.

Assuming, of course, that your computer suffers no wear and tear at running at 100% CPU for 8 hours a night...

most chairs are around 2l$-5l$ for 10 mins even then your only going to make like 4l$ an hour not even that after working everything else out....so its not really worth it, camping is really wrong and messes sl up for other people, i seen mainland sims packed so bad other people which own land in those sims cant get to theres, do you think thats fair? well its not, its sad really that camping Chairs are making Second Life less fun for others,

If this risk concerns you, underclock your CPU ... that's what gold-farming macro users in other mmorpgs do. That said, any computer that can't deal with a full load is a badly built computer.

I should add that I'm not a fan of camping chairs myself... but I keep seeing comments along the lines of "leaving the computer on all night probably costs more than you earn" ...which is, basically, a massively inaccurate assumption.

Exactly. Other residents in a shared sim are also trying to run business's too. There have been times in my sim where one casino has dominated all the resources and I could not enter the sim yet alone any customers I would have had. This is an unfair thing for any sim resident to do to the other residents of a sim. If they want all the resources, they should buy their own sim and not set up in a shared one. Camping pits don't share sims, they suck them dry for everyone else.

Not only that campers, that hard drive is spinning at 7500 rpm 24-7 and is a ticking time bomb. You try to justify the chump change you made camping when you have to replace that sucker and spend hours reloading data of the programs you even have anymore and all the stuff that is gone forever.

Also when ever a resident can't enter the zone because of afk campers, they will try to get a server reset and no matter how long you have been in that chair, its all gone when the server resets.

Why does Linden Labs not ban camping chairs and dance pads (i.e. any device that pays you to sit there logged in AFK)?

How to enforce it? Ah, very simple! LL would pay a reward to any resident who spotted a camping device - maybe 500 lindens?. LL would fine the owner of said device a fee. Perhaps 5000 Lindens for each device found. And on second offense the owner would be banned for 30 days.

I know this is not a perfect solution, but maybe it would be a good short-term fix to help the people in Loniki's situation, who cannot even conduct business in their own sim any more. Yes, this is ruining her business. The owner of the casino doesn't seem to care about that - so ban him! He is violating the TOS!

As a new player... not knowing much about this game, not knowing if it's worth it to spend more real dollars to play the game, sitting in the camping chairs trying to earn a few L$ to buy some cool stuff , I have met some really nice players and learned a lot about the game from them.

I realize most of the time camping chair areas are just people afk , but not always. I do think camping chairs serve a purpose in the game.

The problem seems to be that if you happen to situated next to a business that uses camping chairs, your business suffers. Seems to me that's a problem with the game/server and not with the other people trying to run a business.

I'd rather see the whole place full of camping chairs than sex for sale, but that's just me.

Of course the cost effectiveness only comes into play for amateur campers. Professional campers know to simply run multiple copies of the client (using the command line parameter -multiple) while running the client minimized with near all the rendering types off so even a craputer can handle multiple accounts. 5 accounts per IP/computer make it quite easy to camp at a profit almost anywhere. :)
