I never ran into this before and I switch land back and forth from groups all the time. Anyway, I noticed my tier fees jumped way up a few days ago. It seems that my group contributions were way higher then the actual land I have in them. So I contacted LL and I'm still working with them but I wanted to know if someone can tell me faster. Do I pay for tier I'm not even using that's sitting in a group? I mean I know if I have 50000sqm of land that I still need to pay the full sim tier level but do I pay for tier allocated to a group that's not being used too?

Yes, contributing tier to a group registers the same as purchasing land with the tier. That's why new premium residents, who commit, then withdraw, their 512sm to a group, find that they're no longer eligible for first land.

I had a friend who had that happen to him. He was really pissed. I ended up buying first land with my alt (since I had no intention of ever "abusing" First land by buying any with my alt for myself) and selling it to him for the same price. I guess it makes sense, but they really should explain that so this doesn't come as a nasty surprise for people...

Wow. Well at least I understand it now, ty. I think what I did was moved some land back to me from group then changed my mind and put it back in group. No problem there, but, when deeding it back to group I checked the "owner makes contribution with deed" box and it added more tier to that group. It should have said I didn't need to but oh well, its a hundred dollar lesson learned!

Official Linden word confirms it:

Your total group donations is xxxxxx sq meters. You will be billed for
group donations until the donations are removed. Even if the land is
no longer within the group, you are still offering to contribute to
the group tier until your donation is removed.
