I own 6000 sq M +/- on the river in Yamoto sim. I've had these parcels for 2 years +/-.
As long as I've owned this land, the river between my home and the Muir and Baker sims has been "protected" and open to all for travel for almost its entire width. Its been a pleasure to navigate by boat. Likewise as the river goes between the Muri Gama and Amida sims it has been 'open'.
All of the sudden the following has taken place:
- It appears that land that was "Protected" has somehow become "For Sale". A very narrow amount of river now exists between several parcels, destroying the earlier wide navigatable river we ALL once enjoyed.
- Several Land owners have set their land to "Limited Access". This further limits use of the water, ESPECIALLY when the owners do not mark the channel. Its quite a shock to be nicely saling and suddenly being "banned" in the middle of a river!
OK, you can always all respond with "tough...its our land"....etc. etc. I hope SL first checks to see if some of this land has been 'taken' somehow, as I don't remember the "Protected" river width being this narrow in the past. Or maybe LL decided to sell it.
As in RL, "waterfornt" land today has brought with it profits for many, as well as terrible feelings and feuds, and in RL, courts full of hungry lawyers.
But "resources" such as these need to be protected and free for the use of all. Sorry to rant, but one day YOU will be serenely floaing along and be ejected in the middle of a lake. I hope YOU enjoy it then.
Shouldn't SL be ABOVE RL?

I belive it was stated recently (and officially) that the sale of protected land is impossible, from a policy standpoint. I'd suggest asking the Lindens, via the "answers" forum if there has been a sale of protected land in that sim, accidental or otherwise.
As for the right to pass...
Robin's recent answeres to me and others recently I find rather dissapointing. It seems clear to me that, on the mainlands, our right to travel to destinations by the method we choose needs include this right to traverse the mainland unmolested - and seeing as protected lands are not sufficient to this we need to have the right to pass over and through privately held land.
Doesn't seem such a big deal to me. We can't destroy, deface or steal in SL without the express permission of the object owner. Being allowed a few seconds to scoot by unmolested seems such a tiny thing.
Meh.
It would be easier still if the protected land were always sufficient to get your craft by. But water channels end without warning or reason, roads dissapear at the edge of private land.

I get a great deal of pleasure from sailing around in Second Life - and I agree that the waterways are very important and enhance the rest of the landscape immensely. I, too, run into those ban-lined or scripted-to-limit-access plots that send my boat rapidly backwards, eject me, or send me home in a teleport. I don't like it either. I think the protected Linden land serves a great purpose of making land fun to explore and desirable to buy.

At the risk of diverting this thread (apologies in advance)...
I have been interested in trying boating in SL. DOes anyone know of a place where someone can rez a boat and give it a shot without having to own waterfront land?
My search so far for a rezzing place on water that is public has been hopeless.

My search so far for a rezzing place on water that is public has been hopeless. Yes! To the East of Isabel - there is a gigantic lake - one of the largest inland lakes in SL. In the center of that lake, are two islands - the western island has a Linden boat-launch area. You can likely make it out on the map. Boat rezzing is allowed there. Hope this helps!

I find Im quite puzzled about waterways in SL. It would appear there is a demand for waterfront land. Its always carried a premium.
But the waterways are obstructed. Finding navigable water is a challenge.
So ... what is the value of waterfront land if it turns into drainage ditches that can't be navigated?
Does LL have any interest in protecting the waterways?

there are other threads discussing this very issue, so obviously it's important that someone in Lindenland sits up and takes notice.
I agree--horrible to be sailing along and get bounced or stuck or deep in the middle of a sim.
Let's compile a nice long list of good sailing places.
To try out boats, try Hollywood, but not at race or practice times.
My little piece of Plumeria has some nice sailing. It's next to Botany Cove, a lovely place to stop and explore.

This is one of the largest reasons why I rarely use vehicles of any sort in SL. I have several free ones that I obtained as part of various freebie offers from vendors. But trying to find a rational place to use them has been an exercise in frustration. All too often if I do find a streach of road or water that I can rez a vehicle on, it ends at the edges of the sim, or even sooner. Or in many cases, it's blocked farther on by privacy barriers. Why bother making a vehicle and zipping down the road, when in less time than it takes to rez the vehicle and hop on, you run out of road or river or lake to run it on?
I think the Lindens and SL Residents would benefit from buying back sufficient 'right of way' space in a majority of the sims to create and maintain a Linden-owned network of public-access roads and waterways. The value of properties along such access routs would, in most cases, improve - especially for merchants, who would be more accessible.

With p2p teleport I'm not sure that land accessibility would change whether you're by a road/waterway, or half way up a mountain - but certainly having some sort of navigatable network of road and water would certainly be a nice addition to the game. Lewis, if I am 'driving down a road', or 'cruising down a river', I will, in passing, see many more things along the sides of that right of way than if I was flying high above that same area. And I wouldn't see those things at all if I always used P2P teleports.
Case in point. I have been to Bruin a dozen times, to go to Jakkal's Werehouse. The standard teleport, even before P2P, to get there via a landmark for Jakkal's shop, dropped me almost on Jakkal's doorstep. But as a result, I virtually never saw the rest of the sim. I would TP there, browse or buy, and TP home again. If it was practical for me to travel by land, I would, perhaps, have traveled past many other interesting features in that sim, and seen many of the other merchants there.
FYI - Due to my system being fairly minimal for accessing SL, I have to keep my draw distance dialed down fairly low. This makes me somewhat 'near-sighted' in SL. I could see what is on either side of a road I am travelling on, assuming it rezzes fast enough. I could not see the ground if I was flying at any appreciable altitude.

I allow rezzing on almost every peice of land I'm selling, and I always have water in my stock. If your interested in a place to rez a boat or build a boat, IM me, and I'll give you the address of someplace I own on the water. Just don't leave stuff there for days on end. I do come around to every peice I own about once every 7 days. If stuff is just lying around with no one working on it, I'll return it.
