It has come to my attention that some of the newer sims can hold up to 40 AVs. Does anyone know if the older sims will also be able to hold 40 AVs or will they continue to be at a disadvantage?

A likely thing to believe is that as time passes by, sim hardware will be upgraded progressively, so in turn, all sims will be able to handle more avatars on them. This isn't official by any stretch but looking at the course SL has taken, it's probable.

Sim performance was what came to mind when I saw sims being subdivided into many small plots and set for sale. I'm only half way through an informative thread on the lag monster in the Technical Issues forum. An increased number of avatars is still considered a contributory factor in decreased sim performance regardless of the hardware at this point. Is there something later in the thread which makes this distinction?

Avs are without doubt the greatest cause of lag - avs with lots of scripted attachments more so.

The debate is over what else causes lag and what we can do to limit it. No-one (as far as I know) is denying that avs are the main problem - however what good is a sim without anyone in it?

Just cos you can physically get 40 people in a sim doesn't mean that anyone can move...

While all the latest features like animations, prim hair, bling, etc. all make for a much richer visual experience, I can't help but feel they have destroyed some of the community sense from early on. This is particularly true in the area of large events.

I recall well, about this time last year, being at a massive charity party that, at one point, had 70 people in the sim. Sure, we were lagged like crazy, but we weren't locked into immobility either. It was quite workable as long as you came prepared for it.

Now that was a party! 70 AVs all chatting and dancing at once, auctions going on for 10s of thousands of L$, all for charity. What a blast! Today, I doubt you could pull off such an event - seems like the sims start to crawl at 30-40 AVs, often even less. Too bad really - I favor the larger community of people as opposed to all the bling, hoochie hair, particle scripts, ad nauseum.

But that's just me.... :D
