Suggestion to boost the economy, areas of investment, job market, and more....Roads.
In 1st world, I'm part of a group which provides research and consulting regarding certain policies regarding many areas, one being economics and transportation, to the govmnt. While not my specific area, I do pay attention to trends.
If one agrees that "people are people" and whether being in SL or out, the U.S. economy is largely dependent on the automotive industry. Would that all stop suddenly, in theory today, the country would collapse in hours. Conversely, if SL would add drivable roads, then auto/ various vehicle manufacturing, sales, after-market business that sub-contract, on and on, and all the related businesses would form in SL, greatly expanding the economic base. This would be good for Linden Labs, and good for us all, in one form or another.
Yes, we can fly in SL, but we also have an addiction to automobiles, and vehicles of all sorts.
Why not supply that addiction with roads as part of Linden Labs's move to improve the economic base?
Just one man's opinion, FWIW. Btw, I don't make cars or aircraft, but I spend a lot of money buying and enjoying them.

I too love roads and don't know why we don't have more in SL.
There's a nice network that runs out from the Waterhead welcome area, and one goes past my property (see signature) that runs for a fair way in both directions.
I'm still planning on getting an island simply so I can set out a road network that has a purpose.
Nothing more relaxing than going out on my pushbike for an evening ride as the sun goes down.

roads will not help the econemy. most of the decline of an econemy is caused by excess of new money being created. ask any econimist. to much money in the system will devalue the currency. that is the case in SL. however its being slowly remedied. currently 75% or more of new money entering the SL econemy is created to fuel the stippend system. 22 million maybe mor L$ a month are being created by linden labs to pay people to do nothing. as that number gets reduced the L$ will start to have real value. (provsky dont bite my head off)

I intend on a couple of islands in the not so distant future too, and I'll have roads also. Maybe we can arrange some sort of "road club" where our sims would be all bridge-able or have landing areas for aircraft or hovercraft, so we can form our own highway system, made up of people who like roads and love to drive. As was said, a cruise watching a beautiful sunrise or sunset in SL is a great feeling.
Problem tho' is for US to lay down roads, is roads = use of prims. Lindens could just make roads as an option on a sim/island maybe?

Although I love the ability to fly around and explore, I think removing flying entirely would boost the economy in the long run. Removing avatar flying would allow people building vehicles of various types to actually have a purpose to build them and sell them other than as a status symbol of their building ability. Roads would actually be used and waterways would have boats traveling on them more frequently. Skyboxes would be even more private because you would need a flying machine to even get near it. It would give a purpose to all of these things if flying were gone. Now that said, teleporting would still exist, so it wouldn't cause traveling across the map a problem. The only downside would be building because you would need a jet pack or something to fly around and build. Now it could be set to limit flying to say 20-30m high, just to allow you to do your thing. I'm just thinking of ideas, but avatar flying has always seemed to me to limit the economy because people would clearly buy more vehicles and other contraptions from others who build them if this wasn't here. *shrug* I fully expect to hear protests, so... ah well. I wish I was as sanguine about the alleged economic benefits of roads and automobiles in both RL and SL. Such optimism! But I can't resist noting today's headine from LA Times: "U.S. Emits Half of Car-Caused Greenhouse Gas, Study Say" http://www.latimes.com/news/science/la-na-greenhouse28jun28,0,7927773.story If SL is, in fact, going downhill fast, as many forum posters argue, then our Linden friends might well oblige the request and start paving. Perhaps an Exxon sim too?

Is it actually possible to drive on the roads now, since I've been away ? Or do we still keep falling through them ?
If the road-driving could be got to work, I would be all for it.
Though we would need some method for building drive ways onto our land. I have a road right past my land, but I am separated from it by a wall I cannot delete and a piece of Linden land which quickly deletes anything I put on it in an attempt to drive my vehicles on and off.
I agree that truly workable vehicles, and solid roads we could connect our plots to, would inspire a burst of creativity and enthusiasm. Not sure about the "economic impact" aspects , though........

Lewis Roads don't make money for LL... Its a non revenue generating hole of land. Unless LL wants to allow the sale of road land to the public..

Perhaps not... but the land value does increase, because you are guaranteed access on at least one side if your neighbours all slap up ugly ban lines; plus there is something about "being near a road" that causes more explorers to drop by. I thought you might have advocated 'toll roads' that people pay to drive along (using the pay to access parcel button).... now theres a nice little capitalist moneymaking idea for you! Lewis
