The price of the L$ has risen about 15% in the last few days. If this continues, new players will get discouraged because they're priced out of the market, and not be interested in Second Life.

The sky is falling!!!!

From a low of under 3.50 on Thursday, to over 4.00 now.

gains are illusory

Is there anything that can be done to make it go down again? Perhaps I'll try starting a panic.

Did you hear that IGE is going to dump all of its L$ tomorrow?

I'm pretty sure it's just going up so much because it dropped significantly due to above average selling recently and it's going back to normal.

Technically, all currencies are worthless. At least those not backed by Gold. Otherwise, they are only the worth the faith in value people place in them.

I think the market is up or down based on hopes or fears about baseball or interest rates or the average length of womens skirts.

Oh, and all money is fiat currency, even if backed by gold. Gold is only valuable backing for currency if people want gold. If there was some fundamental shift in human activities, one might find potatoes worth far more than gold. Ace's blog entry was an interesting read.

Yeah. It's kinda like the value of diamonds. A commodity who's value is even more illusory than L$.

Potatoes, Gold, etc. You are very correct. On a fundamental level, our valuation of anything all depends on a very basic term called "Supply and Demand". If everybody wants it and there isn't enough to go around, the value of the item goes up. If you assign a "number" to value, you get a numerical valuation that can be gauged and tracked. So if everybody wants Gold and there is a limited supply, up goes the value. The same is true with potatoes, water, wine, and even Tulips in the 1600s in Holland.

Its not an issue about the tangable item being traded and valued. Its about 4 basic factors.

1) Supply
2) Demand
3) Fear
4) Greed

The combination of those 4 factors will shape our view (as humans) of the object of our desires. Gold or Linden Dollars, it doesn't matter.
