You know, I was thinking on something:
If the SL server is a virtual server on a computer, then why can't we have 4 smaller sims on a single server shared?
No, really! Think on it!
The basic cost of buying a mini island would be about $250 startup and $50 per month. You would get a 128x128 meter section, or about 16000 m2. Each person would get 1/4 of the server power, but would only need that much normally.
Let's be honest, it would be affordable AND worth it to some people.
Heck, raise the price to $300 and $60 and people would STILL go for it.
Any thoughts?

I rent 1/4 sim parcels on private islands to people who are looking for something like this. The sim is split into 4 quarters using teraformed walls, with a shared hub area in the center. People seem to really enjoy this set up. It offers complete lag free privacy if desired. There are no upfront fees, complete terraformability, hub access adjacent to your land, and full group controls. The recurring monthly cost is $75 per month. While not exactly what you have described here, I think this is a pretty similar solution.

Your idea would undermine Schwanson's business, Frost, by making it possible to buy smaller islands separately without resident middlemen and renters.
I don't know if it would be in LL's interest to have to wait on all those extra customers they get when they create more ownership possibilities. And I think at some level they are happy when one resident takes on the chore of managing sims for them and subdividing them and handling them in sales to other residents.

True, and I'm actually not for taking business away from anyone. The truth is, I did not KNOW that there were people doing this. I keep busy, ya know. Hmnnn... From: someone Right now I pay $40 + $10 for 9011 m2. 2059 prims. I would be paying $75 + $0 for 16384 m2. 3744 prims.
Increase of $25 per month for an effective increase of 7373 m2 and 1685 prims.
To pay tier, I would have to make about $20,000 per month. I need to talk to Botany about this, since there would also be the additional effort of moving our current homes and Inn... So many options... You say I have total control over my land, including terraform and building? What about security? Can I Control entry and such? Also, will I have the ability to change land parcle borders to allow sectioning of my land, such as for sectioning movie/music content? Lastly, are their renter's rules, and what are they? (Does that Foolish Frost guy ever stop jabbering?)

Foolish,
An island owner can give you access to part of his island through a deed. You must form a group, and he is temporarily an officer in it and hands over access to you. You have a non-tiered land group then accessing the land. At least that is how it is done on the islands where I own land.
Yes, the owner can turn on the terraforming for you. I believe they would have to do the sectioning but you could then put in the music.
These islands usually have building codes and rules of behaviour, yes. Schwanson may have less or more, but there is nothing like your own land on the mainland. Nothing like it. I hope you'll stick with that LOL.

If their are particular av's that are causing trouble, I can make the island invisible to them. From: Foolish Frost Lastly, are their renter's rules, and what are they? The rules are really simple. No malls, no major casinos, and no major clubs. We just ask that everyone share the sim resources fairly. Since I started doing this in December, we have not had any major incidents. People have been very respectful of their use of resources. From: Foolish Frost (Does that Foolish Frost guy ever stop jabbering?) I hope not.

Mind you, I agree with your rules whole-heartidly, but I have the Fool's PlayGround, and IF it ever became an en-mass hang out... Fair's fair, and I don't want to annoy neigbors either, ya know.

It's much easier for Linden to have third parties rent out partial sims than to do it themselves. With a whole sim they only have to deal with one person for payment etc. With a quarter they would have 4 to deal with - and disputes about unfair resource usage as well.
