The only ones I can think of are beg, host events, play *ingos and sell your body to the sex market now that trading is gone (mostly).

Well... let's see here:

Besides making things there is:
  1. Offering services. (This isn't nessesarily what it sounds like.)
  2. Getting good at Tringo/Slingo/*ingo or gambling games.
  3. Hanging around money balls. (Dull.)
  4. The generosity of others. (Hardly reliable.)
  5. Buy it from IGE or Anshechung.com or... um... (ok, who else sells L$ in reasonable quantites?) or wait for the new Linden exchange.

Do a Places search for 'money tree'. Great source of income for newbies is to pick the L$ fruit of these trees.

Please don't dismiss making things too quickly. It's not as difficult to build things as it might first appear. Search for the ivory tower library of primitives... it's a self-paced tutorial on how to build.

For me, building things is one of the most enjoyable aspects of Second Life. So even if you dont make money from building stuff, you might have fun anyway.

Explore. Play tringo, go to clubs, attend classes, gawk at pretty builds and ugly builds (some are pretty ugly), grab some freebies in Yadni's junkyard. Go to a sandbox and see what cool and not so cool things people are doing. Make some friends along the way. Once you get a feel for the lay of the land, then think about how you can leverage your own unique skills to make money in this fascinating world.

I will be deadfaced and serious when I say I try my darndest NOT to make money, and L$ gets launched my way. Surely I can't be the only one to experience this, it's some kinda wacked out quantum field though. It seems like there are Residents who focus too much on money and lose what is attainable and initially takes more time & energy, but is ultimately more rewarding because the skills you learn you can apply not only to SL, but offline too.

Specifically, I've been recruited for some odd jobs, like proofreading notecards, nitpicking builds for texture flaws, beta testing products (upside is you often get a complimentary version of it in the end!), giving sex and love advice to couples having relationship difficulties, etc.

I have won at gambling games, but I've lost a lot more. I have a bad gambling addiction so I hesitate to do that any further. Scouring the forums for things to partake in is very useful, as is talking to a lot of people and learning from them. That information is a real wealth that'll get you on the right path.

A helpful approach I've heard to building is to just make silly stuff for your own amusement... things that make you and friends laugh in a sandbox. Keep making them, and refinement will hopefully come naturally. Result? You'll be well on your way!

I emphasize I do not make stuff and sell it, although I have many friends that do... I am an explorer on here, in search of creative, lateral opportunities.

Begging is an interesting thing. In all previous RPGs I've been to, everyone who has just joined hangs around myself or some other person, whining and begging for cash of some sort or items.

In SL, I have yet to see a beggar. Maybe they're all busy trying to make the dark glasses and tin cup.

Torley's got a good point here. Explore, at least until you get your building skills polished.

I made my first 100L$ doing detective work, something that just dropped out of the air, and it was because of something I found while exploring. I remember over heard someone wanting to make an invisible house (I forget, but the entire structure was completely invisible and looked like an empty lot, but a person could be inside and items with them couldn't be seen). I recalled seeing something very similar in Rausch to what this person wanted, but could barely remember the builder's name. I ended up going to Rausch and chatting up people who where there regularly and, after about an half hour or so, I had a solid lead. I let them know what I found and they tipped me for my trouble.

So, if you run out of cash in those first few weeks, just explore. Who knows what you might find and where it could lead.

They're around. I think for the most part the free items left around the telehubs and such or given away to friends and group members pretty much kills any need for begging. Outside of that, I can't really fathom why anyone would beg for L$, unless they're a clothes horse or have a gambling problem or something.

I do :) Catch me online for near-instant transfer. I also propose weekly stipends for a monthly fee.

Torley, some people have fun shopping ;)

you'd be amazed, slayr, at how often building stuff for yourself turns into cash anyway. build something you like and someone's gonna walk past at some point and say, "hey cool, can i have one?".
Once someone walked up to me in a sandbox and asked for help with some scripting. I tried a few things, but didn't get it quite right. His response? "Well, thanks for your time anyway, heres L$500 for your efforts!"
Or you could take up SLs version of trainspotting:

(until the trains are finished, that is) :)

Some places have an object that ranomly selects some lucky avatar in its vicinity now and again to give a little L$ to. They're not all round, but "money ball" is how they're collectively referred to.

I'm glad you asked. :-) Visit my casino (linked on my sig) to see one in action. Gives out $8 to a random person every ten minutes.

Sorry, can't resist the plug. :-)

Minerva RPG - You get paid to work down the mines!
10-01-2005 01:13
Minerva is a RPG game costing only 50L$ to join (get a backpack) and normally pays L$ for every item you mine (depending on demand). This is paid by other players who want to use these base items (iron ore, charcoal, limestone) to make into more complex items (of course worth even more)... These base items take time to mine.. hence the payment

Look for Minerva on the find list for locations and the main Minerva Sim..

Any questions head over to the Minerva Sim, and I'm sure someone is there willing to show you around... also remember to click on the board to see what to do in the rest of the RPG.

Minerva (just Mister Ambassador not any players) has given out over 7,000L$ since the game started just 3 weeks ago!

Just buy the damn money. You're supposed to buy money. It's what keeps SL ticking. If nobody bought money then we would be stuck with the same crap content we had in beta where people took ages to make something and often released it unfinished or unpolished :)

bake sales!! :)
10-02-2005 09:01
just kiddin'. :) plenty of good suggestions already... if you like clubbin', plenty of clubs have moneyballs; just hang out, dance and talk... best chances obviously if there's not -many- folks in the club while the moneyball's active, but usually they have a 'capacity minimum' to activate.

though, hmmm now i wonder, what would an sl 'bake sale' look like, or sell? maybe like a yard/garage sale of different wares, a 'farmer's market' kind of thing, once a week? are there any events like that currently??

Talk to everybody. Not everybody will want to talk, but most/many will. Be sure to mention that you're a new resident.

Most people are more than willing to be helpful in some way. It could be an outright cash donation (someone gave me $L 1000), some great advice, help with something, so cool clothes or whatever.

And when you're a seasoned resident you can pay it forward, so to speak.
