This is actually just my unqualified take on STIPENDS OMG RUN AWAY!
The premium stipend, coupled with initial tier and the "right" to rent parcels on the Linden estate, are worth the $6-10US/month we pay for the package. If premium stipends are terminated, it'll be hard for me to argue good or bad for the economy, my pocketbook, or the future of Second Life.
What I will argue is that the package will no longer be worth a monthly fee. At that point, LL will have to either dump the premium motif with the bathwater or accept the fact that everyone, and when I say everyone I speak for myself, will migrate away from their estates to ones that don't charge a monthly fee, on top of monthly tier, just to cover the "right" to "own" land.
Do you think they're foolish enough to kill stipends and expect us hard core mainlanders to continue paying premium fees?

If land ownership fees were cut in combination with cutting stippends, that would still be a large benefit to land owners. And if people drop their premium accounts and go rent from someone, that someone still has to pay land owner premiums, and probably won't care about the loss of the tiny $500l amount (compared to what they make in rental fees) especially when a. their cost of land ownership decreases, and b. their customer base (renters) increase. This would be bad for LL in the short run, though, since it doesn't cost them anything to give you that $500l a week for your $10us.

Hmmm, I still think a 'basic accounts only, no stipends, want land? rent or buy tier, no incentive payments, want L$? earn it or buy on Lindex' system with LL selling L$ at whatever - say 250/US$ - and regulating the economy by manipulating the land tap' would be a simple and elegant solution. Plus it would have the positive effect of only having ONE control to tweak. At the moment there are way too many controls. It's simply to complex to tweak easily. OK, it would probably take a few months to soak up the L$ and land excess, but after that it should be plain sailing.
