Is First Land generated by LL? How does it come about? Does LL keep a balance of firstland & other land so that not too much is inworld at once to upset the economy? Is generation of land purely driven by residents' Sim purchases or does LL generate up an island by itself every so often?
I need an inworld Land 101 class to go to!

LL are constantantly adding to the mainland continent. Some of those new sims go up for auction and some are reserved for first land. That land will be owned by Governor Linden. If you fly around or look on the map you can go visit these new sims before they are put up for auction or parcelled off.

Plus, if I'm not mistaken new first land is put on the market on Tuesdays and Thursdays. At least that's what I remember, it's been a while  |

Just to elaborate a bit more: As mentioned above Linden adds Sims to the grid, some of those sims are converted to First Land sims and divided up into 512sqm parcels for sale.
Another method Linden acquires land for First Land is through abandoned land. If someone quits the game for some reason, doesn't sell their land or cancelled their account that land can be reclaimed then resold or put up for auction. An example is my first land, which was a reclaimed 512sqm in the middle of a well established Sim on the northern continent.
