FWIW I've submitted a bug report on this, but because it affects whether people can find you in Find, I thought I'd post the fact here. If you don't mark your land as 'Mature' in the About Land box, then your land description probably won't show up in 'Find', whether or not the searcher checks the 'Include Mature contact' box. So your L$30 / week spent on showing up in 'Find' may be wasted.

It's not a bug. It's perfectly normal and pertains to if your land is in a PG region or not. Note the label on the checkbox says: Include places in Mature regions
However, those "Mature" buttons with the ? buttons are confusing--click on the ? for a further explanation of what they're for. Think of it more as, if your land is already in a Mature sim, but includes specifically Mature content (like a porno store), you will need to check the box to be properly included on a planned future website section... because the website is PG, like it says in the Community Standards: Global Standards, Local Ratings All areas of Second Life, including the www.secondlife.com website and the Second Life Forums, adhere to the same Community Standards. Locations within Second Life are noted as Safe or Unsafe and rated Mature (M) or non-Mature (PG), and behavior must conform to the local ratings. Any unrated area of Second Life or the Second Life website should be considered non-Mature (PG). I understand this confusion and have also personally recommended the wording be clearer.

I'm not talking about searching the "Places" tab in Find, I'm talking about searching the "All" tab, and in that tab, the check box reads "Include Mature content," and I think any normal person would think that means the search will not reveal mature material (content), not that it would avoid showing you things that sit in a Mature sim.

^ Ahhh yes, that is certainly part of what I mentioned earlier. Using the instance you mentioned, no, it should not make a difference in the current Find whether you don't check "Mature" in ABOUT LAND ---> OPTIONS or not. Rather, the wording should be changed in FIND ---> ALL from: "Include Mature content"
to "Include places in Mature regions" Since the checkbox is dependent on the region-wide rating. Same goes for FIND ---> CLASSIFIEDS as a matter of consistency. If you have a specific repro that shows otherwise, please post it!

I gather from your response that the purpose of the "mature" box in the About Land dialog is to indicate whether the sim in which the land sits is a mature sim or not. But the fact that a sim is mature or not is a matter of settled record; there is even an SL call that will tell you whether a sim is mature or not, and certainly the server can look it up. Please explain to me why it is necessary for the land owner to indicate this fact by filling in that box on the About Land.

To simplify and recap, there's an inconsistency, but it's different from what you mentioned. I must also add some new info.
Let's start from the top!
FIND ---> ALL is a combination of search results from four other tabs: CLASSIFIEDS, EVENTS, PLACES, PEOPLE, and GROUPS.
CLASSIFIEDS, EVENTS, and PEOPLE tabs depend on whether you have their respective "Mature" boxes (to denote explicit Mature content) checked.
There is no "Mature" checkbox for GROUPS.
PLACES isn't dependent on its "Mature" box in "ABOUT LAND ---> OPTIONS". Whether you check that box or not doesn't make a difference in the finder results today. What does make a difference is simply that you're situated in a Mature region, which of course, as we both know, can't be changed. Why?
Because... FIND ---> PLACES is based on "Include places in Mature regions". And using FIND ---> ALL fetches that tab's results as part of the whole, making it an "odd bird out".
So--confusing wording. Not so much a bug as an inconsistency, but one I agree with you about.
I tested with a parcel in a PG region. I marked it as "Mature" and searched for it in FIND ---> ALL with "Include mature content" checked and unchecked. It showed up both times! I then repeated the same test with a parcel in a Mature region. It only showed up when "Include mature content" was checked, confirming the inconsistency.
I adapt what I said earlier to a better proposed solution: make PLACES consistent like CLASSFIEDS, EVENTS, and PEOPLE.
And thus, that will solve the problem.
I'm going to communicate this onwards ho!
Hope this helps. ^_~

Thanks for taking all this trouble explaining these things to me. Just to batter on the obvious, here is the problem this design poses for me: I sell non-mature objects (doors and windows) in a mature sim (Grass). Nobody who reads my land description in Find or comes to my store will find anything 'mature', as that term is used in the TOS. It is a really boring place. But, because I occupy a mature sim, nobody who clears the "Include Mature content" flag in Find will ever find my property description. I cannot reach such people, not because of what I offer, but because of where I live. I don't know what you mean when you say you want to "... make PLACES consistent like CLASSIFIED, EVENTS and PEOPLE." My problem lies not with the Places tab, but with the All tab. There I would like to see the words "Include Mature content" changed to "Include Places in Mature regions."
