I want to talk about reforming the L$ for land setup. Curently it offers you the wonderful option of trading your linden for land tier. the idea is EXELENT but the exchange rate is terrible at 1/7th the rate offered by the market ie. IGE GOM (at 18$ - 5k) to put things in perspective if IGE were to trade in every red Linden he would be compensated about 5,000 $US. What incentive is this to trade L$ for land tier? why offer such a option if it isnt going to have any value to the residents? I would like to ask everyones opinion on the topic. I believe that if the value were based on the market value of the linden it would actually help strengthen the value of the linden through sinking money back to LL. ideas?

Land Tier Costs & Land prices
11-12-2004 23:25
I believe that if the value were based on the market value of the linden it would actually help strengthen the value of the linden through sinking money back to LL. ideas? I agree. But LL can only go so far with this. They can't live without a real money revenue flow. Maybe they could give a better exchange rate while limiting the amount of your tier costs that can be satisfied in this way. For example, they could match GOM's exchange rate, but only for the costs associated with your top-most tier. or only for half of your tier costs. This would make it practical to at least pay some of your tier costs in L$, while leaving other tier costs to be paid in US$. The other area that LL has a lot of control is in land availability. I know that I have seen land prices drop dramatically in Atis and I see land staying on the market longer. When land is scarce it drives up the price, which drives demand for L$. If both the L$ and land prices are dropping, then maybe we have slightly overshot the amount of land that is needed right now. LL could cut back slightly on new land and hold returned land rather than put it back on auction immediately _____________________

My biggest concern about the l$ for land tier is that some new user is going to spend all their l$ on it by accident and then find out about GOM / IGE afterwards.
I think that would be rather unfortunate.. _____________________

could a new user ever have that much L$ to spend on land tier in the first place without buying it on GOM?

Land with no value
11-14-2004 12:37
Land value ?
I Just let go 2900 sq meters. Couldn't sell it and to keep it would of cost me an extra US 40$ a month to keep it, due to tiering. Thats real land value. |

good point shack, I was thinking about that, and i believe there can be a happy median somewhere. LL is a smart crew and I am sure it can happen. I just hate having it as an "option" when it's really not. I would rather see it go in its current form and not be offered rather then look at the slap in the face exchange rate.

The L$ for Land tier option was setup before GOM and IGE traded the L$. The exchange rate was therefor a random guess at what the 'market' would stand.
GOM started trading L$ very soon after and people soon realised the huge difference in L$ value and so the L$ for Land thing never really caught on. The thing is, you can pay your land tier very easily with L$ by using GOM to exchange them and lots of people do this. _____________________

maybe we have slightly overshot the amount of land that is needed right now. LL could cut back slightly on new land and hold returned land rather than put it back on auction immediately I was thinking about this a little bit more... What if an unusually large number of people recently created Alt accounts? Depending on how SL does their land calculation, this could have contributed to a situation in which too much land was released. Don't know, just thought it was worth mentioning... _____________________
