Who wants to take a stab at this question:

Q) At any given moment in time, where is the bulk of the L$730,559,861 sitting?

Linden Labs can always chime in with the holy grail answer. Obviously its in the hands of residents. But is the bulk of the float spread among all the residents? Or is their something like the top 10% hold 90% of the float? I know IGE has a massive amount. So does Anshe. Them together most likely accounts for 10% of the float. But what about the other 90%?

Right now, I have $L 233. I have to convert to USD to pay six sims of tier.

So, that leaves just another L$ 730,559,628 to account for.

730,559,628

divided by

300,000 users

= 2435.

So, if a good set of prim genitals costs $L 2000, and the average person has 435 on them, we know it's ALL in the hands of just a few naughty content developers... :)

Since the linden stopped -rising- in value, he's had little to complain about.

20% of population accumulates 80% of total wealth. Pareto's law, and there's no reason why SL wouldn't follow it.

I think IGE is a little hard pressed for cash right now. They are no longer selling L$ because they are out of stock. So I really don't think that Anshe has L$73M on hand.

RBD. You told me that it would not go back down (or up) to 300 by the fall. This was when it was in the 320s. Well I waited and it happened early too and sold at 298.

There is a certain point that the number of times these posts come up becomes really unnecessary. Perhaps bumping up an old one would do just fine. Just a suggestion.

I've asked for the statistics we could use to calculate the distribution function of residents' wealth to be added to the economic stats page. Sadly, 'tis not yet implemented. Joannah, the 80/20 Pareto rule is a function of having a calibrated power-law distribution of wealth. SL's wea;th distribution is probably well described by a power law, but without any population wealth stats, it's impossible to judge the rate of falloff.

Silly me -- when Robin asked for suggestions for new economic statistics to add to their stats page, I thought she *meant* it. :o

Seriously, folks...

That $L value is the equivalent of about 2.5M USD.... 'sort of'.

1. Were it to truly come onto the market in a reasonable timeframe, the first few million $L might be worth something.

2. The next 100 million $L would go for a lot less.

3. And should any number of people try to sell off $L 500,000 of it in any reasonable time period, the $L would be next to worthless without some kind of intervention.

So the 'value' out there in the form of $L currency is a lot smaller than it might seem.

OK I confess.

I have it all in a cookie jar hidden under the bed.

Much safer than being stuck in a bank, and I get instant access.

I do have you on ignore, but that doesn't stop me from seeing your thread titles. Pick a thread and bump it. Spamming the forum with the same thread over and over again is rude at best.

I have read this thread and others that are similar to it. I find the debate to be interesting, but what I don't understand is why the distribution of Lindens is important for people to figure out?

Just curious.

Theoretically, you should be able to figure out the most likely future value of the $L by knowing how many $L there are divided between spending players. Richer people that have hoarded their money tend to have bought everything they want leaving them with the large surplus they have. Even large land dealers should try to keep their $L balance down as much as possible to maximize the return on their money. If people knew how the money was distributed, then they could make better guesses at which way the $L value would go. There are alot more factors however, including changes in prices in-world, changes in the U.S. economy, changes in unique players leaving or coming to Second Life, changes in the general emotional feeling people have about the $L's true value, changes in volume of spending in-world, and changes in the volume of people cashing out $L balances. As you can see, it is probably next to impossible to accurately predict the "true" value of the $L, but people like to try.

One way in which this information could prove valuable is when determining how to price your items for sale. If 80% of the population has less than L$500 in their account, it makes more sense to price an item at L$400 than L$500.

I seem to recall on the Ginko Financial website they mention how much they had in deposits and that was close to L$40,000,000. Cyberland mentions a cash reserve of L$6,615,476.

Although Ginko's deposits are a collection of many individual accounts. All that money isn't moved based on the decisions of 1 person, or 1 company.

SL Exchange currently holds L$11-13 million depending on the day. I'm sure there are a few others who have more than that in a single account.

Thats because they love me. They are my fan club. Without me, they have nothing to do but play Tringo. To ignore me would send them into the depths of depression. :)
