Ok im new to the game and everything. And i have a few questions,
1.) What is a tier?
2.) What is a SIM?
3.) So there's 117 prims in a 512 m2 lot, what about if you have 1024 m2 and so forth, is there some kind of formula or somthing for this?
Thanks, Rufus

There's faqs around, but in brief:
Tier is the land use fees Linden Lab charges. For your initial 9.95 monthly for a premium account, you get 512m^2. For 5 dollars more, you get an additional 512 (for a total of 1024), and so on, and so on.
A sim is a region.

From: Rufus Semple Ohhh, whats a maingrid... Is that like the main sims, but where are the rest then? The "main grid" is the main cluster of sims. These are all owned by Linden Lab and is where most of the land you might buy is located. The other sims just sort of floating off that cluster are all private islands, although some people (such as Anshe Chung) have enough to make private continents.

There are 3 prims per 16m, so a 1024 lot will have 234 prims. You can buy more lots in the sim to increase the prims you can have on one lot. If the lots are on different sims, the prims will not combine.

Hi Rufus. Land is a little bit complicated in SL. A "sim" (simulator) is a square piece of land which is the unique responsibility of a single computer in the San Francisco server room. Each is 250m square. Not the servers, the land squares. There are two different types of sim. "Mainland" or "Maingrid" can be divided up and sold in bits so that it has many independent owners, all with the same rights. "Private" or "Private Island" sims can be divided up, but the bits can only be rented, not sold in any official way. There is only one true owner for the whole sim, who retains full control and ownership rights at all times, however much he may appear to delegate these powers. This distinction can get blurred in the minds of beginners, particularly if they see land on a private island apparently offered for sale. The possibility of people being misled by this is a concern of mine, and I have prepared a brief explanation of the issues. If you read it, I think all may become clear, and you could avoid some pitfalls. The easiest place you can find it is here: /130/db/64552/1.html#post676337

Sometimes you will also hear people talk about the main grid as being the one you and I log into, as opposed to the teen grid which the young 'uns log into. You can ususally tell from context when this meaning of the word is being used.
