Just as the topic reads. I am using the free account data base so I cannot own land, I am having trouble keeping up on my constant earning L$ leaving me with barely 248L$ I will try to make money over time, but until then I need a place I can call my own, whether its by myself renting from you, or room-mating with you. If anyone is nice enough to share their home we'll talk in second life and get to know each other before I live in your house if that's the case. Please and thank you.

Why do you need a place to call your own?

Hi Digital, welcome to SL. : )

You're facing the same problem as many newcomers do -- you look around, and see that lots of people have their own houses with furnishings. You'd like a place like that to call your own, but it's costly.

If you ever decide to spend the money to own land, and set up a house then you'll realize that you really want more prims so you can have more furniture and so on. It's not likely that you'll have extra unused prim allotment so somebody else can share that property, and set out their own stuff.

world is yours

Digital the world is yours to explore and play in. You don't really Have to have a home, but I understand and felt the same way. I signed up with a premium membership, but I think lots of people play with a basic membership and either live with friends or pay rent. I should warn you that rent for most places is likely to go up soon due to the developer's incentive phase out. This means that land owners don't get as much benefit for having people on their land. It might be a good time to go premium as I imagine you might find land at a reasonable price, but if you decide to rent, I doubt that your in-world earnings will cover what most places will charge. You will probably need to buy a few thousand $L a month. Luckily, that doesn't cost that much. For just $10 USD you can get around $2500L.

There's plenty of cheap rental places for as little as L$75 a week. Use the "Find" button.

L$75 a week isn't really "cheap" for someone on a basic account, unless they've got another income source besides their stipend. I have seen a few places for L$50 a week, if you're set on renting a home.

I would assume that someone who was looking to rent land would be buying Lindens or doing something similar for extra money anyway. An extra dime a week for the cash doesn't seem unreasonable.

My experiences
02-13-2006 07:17
I've rented from a few places, and the cheapest one at 50l per week was so tiny my cam view was constantly flying outside!

I am extremely happy with my current rental, it is in Champlain in a gorgeous themed environment. I pay $250 per week for 300 prims, and had been buying lindens to cover it.

I ugraded my account though just yesterday, because for the amount that I play SL it just makes sense to have a premium account. I will however continue to rent my villa for a while longer until I find land I'm happy with......

It took alot of searching and visiting places, and a few bad rentals to find this place. The find button is your friend. I suggest searching it daily, and ask around in game too! Feel free to IM me as well, I'll be happy to help.....

Look for Ravenglass rentals.. if they have a spot open is 50L a week for a 512 plot.. or 100L a week for a 1024 - wioth the full 117 or 234 prims respectively. You can even build your own home if you want though they provide one (house prims still count against the land, but they provide many freebie low prim homes through a vendor).

See also this thread, where people discuss their experiences with various landlords. There are some really good ones, as well as realy bad ones out there. From what I have seen, L$50 a week is about the minimum for renting a place of your own, though some rentals will allow a pair of people to share that apartment (though they also share the prim limit). Had one apartment for a while that was roomy enough, but only had a 40-prim limit for the one or two people in it. Available prim counts for your stuff in that L$50 a week space seem to range from as low as 40 prims to as high as 117. So shop around.

I am also a basic account member. When I first started out, I just found a sim I liked, and a place in it that wasn't someone's home, and which would let me set my home location, and rezzed there. Didn't have a house at all. But it certainly is nice to have a 'place of your own', to meet people and to change clothes, and all that.

If you have any friends who are Premium members, you might be able to make a deal with them to use a small portion of their land for your home. Assuming they have enough land and enough extra prim allocation to accommodate you. Essentially, let a friend become your landlord, for whatever payments you can work out with them.

If you rent land that you can build a house on, remember that the prims in your house count against your prim limit. If you get a really pretty home, you might not have enough free prims left to put anything in it!

Free Rental Apts
02-13-2006 08:12
Last i knew, there were a few place sout there for free.

TigerTor 1 and 2 wre two that i can remember off the top of my head. Traffic payments were the key to the free rental and there were requirements of time spent in your own place in exchange for the free rent. give it a look-see. prim limit will keep you careful, and you may learn a thing or two about prim counts which will be helpful to you as you advance in your SL ;]

Good luck and Godspeed!

Digital, good to see you using the forums!

To add to the discussion, I'll repeat what we discussed inworld - the option of joining a group of like-minded people to share in their Second Life home. Search groups in Find, look through the Events, chat with people you meet. Don't burn out, don't be impatient to secure land. Get used to the idea of sharing space with people who will accept your time or effort or just your smiling face instead of additional land. Some of these groups are extended families, some more like the military, or goal-oriented organizations. Most will take some time to warm up to newcomers. You may never be sure what the place will look like when you get back, but expansion of a close-knit social circle can have benefits other than just a place to rez.

As has already been said, those who want their own place in Second Life don't stay on a free account.

I rent at L$50/week
02-13-2006 15:22
From: Digital Glass
Just as the topic reads.

Hi..I rent apartments starting L$50/week...furnished. The property also has a club that includes a number of free activities including dancing, a hangman game, tic-tac-toe and others. I also have an InfoNet terminal and relaxing rug so you can mingle with other residents.

A couple of units became available today so you should be able to find something there. If not, and if you're interested in a long term arrangement, I'll look into renting one of the more expensive ones at the same price - also furnished.

BTW..my apartmetns don't have any limits with respect to sharing or guests, etc. I only ask that you be considerate to other residents.

I don't have my location with me now..but check my profile under the Picks section...or search for "all new rentals" or "fast company" using the Find feature.

Look forward to seeing you there!

One last comment - I'm starting a new group of apartments on waterfront property with games like bowling, trivia, etc - free or almost free games! I'll have a few units at L$50/week there too. More about this later..but current residents of my apartments get first pick at my new property which opens in a week.
